i recently sold my 01 400ex. it had a wiseco 11;1 piston. That same night i rode my cousin's 07 400ex. my thoughts are that his new bike maxed out at my 01's third gear. bottom line.. the older ones seem like they have more ***. would a piston make that much of a difference? without getting crazy is there something cheap to do to a newer one to bring it up to par.. it is crazy how sad the newer ones are on power right off the assembly line. thanks for your thoughts.

P.s. i am going to buy another Honda. just don't know what.

Im not sure about the newer ones but when compairing mine to my friends 04 with slip on and air filter, mine will blow his out of the water im only running the 85.5mm kit at 10:1 with filter and exhaust . So i think the pistion and compression make a big difference when comairing to a stock bike.

The newer ones are jetted leaner and geared differently and come with a terrible exhaust system. Your basic POS out the box. Your best bet is to find a decently modded 1st Gen ('99 - '04) 400ex. You can get one nicely modded for half the price of a new POS one. IMO they're a much nicer bike with the only good looking plastics Honda ever made. There's usually some nice ones on here for sale. Check it out. Good Luck.

If speed/power matters to you, you'd be a fool not to buy a 450. You can buy them used for around $300 more than the 400. It's a no brainer.
