Dumb question about oil change after rebuild

This might be stupid but do you have to wait longer for a break in period before changing the oil after a top end rebuild. I got this 400ex recently and only have about 3 to 4 hours on it since the rebuild and didn't know how long to wait for the oil change.

No. You need to change it right after break in. There may be tiny metal shavings in the motor from the machine work, new parts, etc. If anything you need to change it sooner when the engine is new, definitely not longer.

Thanks what type do you recommend ill just be getting it from my honda dealer.

flyboy1294 is right on!! as for what oil..i use Valvoline 10w-40 for ATV's..but everyone has an opinion about this.:blah:

I don't normally get hung up on brands. I just get full syth. 10w-40 or 15w-40 for use with a wet clutch. (Any oil you buy at the Honda shop should be fine for use with a wet-clutch.)

you also need to change the oil filter on the right hand side of the engine as well inspect it for shavings if you find any shavings in the oil or the filter get some one with experienced eyes to check it out or post pics here and let these guys help you out.

You want a conventional oil not a synthetic oil..


Just pick a good quality brand that you like and keep the oil changed regularly. Most name brand oil will work as long as it’s a conventional oil and not synthetic. The key is not the brand but how often you change it.

I have used Valvoline 10w-40 with great results.

And no it wasn't a dumb question
