I probably don't know what I'm talking about here so let me know if im wrong . wont wrapping the header keep the heat in and isnt heat one of the main issues with air cooled engines I would think that you would want to let the heat escape any way possible.

Be careful if you ride in any water, or get it soaking wet when washing. The moisture will wreak havoc on the pipe.

Color on the frame is sweet. Post a couple overalls if you don't mind.

Header rap actually will cool a motor down because it keeps the radiating heat inside the pipe, and shoots it out through the exhaust. So theres less heat around the motor

I wrap all my 4 strokes, on my ktm, it sure does reduce how much the radiator fan runs and it won't burn my leg. I don't know if it helped my other(hybrid crf450r), but melting the throttle and clutch cable is out of the question now.

Wow that a nice color on that frame. very nice ex!!
I had a piece of wrap on mine at one time ( where the slip on joint is ) and it kept coming off after I washed it a few times.
I never could keep it on though.

How I keep it on is to soak it in water before you apply it. Really stretch it as putting it on. I put a hose clamp on each end of it, I do several areas w/ tight wraps of safety wire also. My last one, I used that high temp spray paint that kinda acts like glue for it. So, the wrap didn't rub off in one specific area, I bought a header guard and put it there, that was my only area I ever had a problem.

I had mine wrapped for over 2 years and it seemed to hold up well. I always ran the bike after washing it so it would dry out.If its wrapped good you shouldnt have much of a problem.

Yeah I only did the area around the seam where the header and the slip on come together. My slip on is about 1/8” shorter than the stock one so I have a little gap there and it doesn’t seal completely. I even took a piece of aluminum sheet metal and made a cover for it and clamped it down on both ends and it still came off.
Using the paint to help glue it down sounds like it might help, and maybe I’ll try doing the whole thing this time, that may help.

Hey man, I'm sure someone asked you in your build thread, but where did you find that carbon fiber heat shield?

nice job on the bike by the way, it turned out awesome!

Don't worry if you accidentally soak it down when you are washing it. Just fire it up after you are done washing it and the heat from the pipe will turn that water into steam and it'll dry out real fast.

Even though the headers may be made from stainless, that still does not mean they won't rust. For exhaust they use pretty much the cheapest stainless material they can get. If they used the high dollar stainless that will not rust, the headers would cost a fortune.

I got it from EBAY !! haha, i just searched for "carbon fiber heat sheild 400ex" but that was back in '04.. so i don't think its gonna be easy to find it.

Looks like HMF makes one.. but its ugly.

Where do you find black wrap? I just always seen the white. I think the black look way better. Also where'd the graphic kit come from? Looks awesome!

You can find different colors at alot of places. I think motosport carries white and black. You can even find it at racing go cart shops if you want like red blue or purple. I had some blue 2 inch (I think it was 2 in been a while since I wrapped it) wide header wrap that I used on mine.

great thread all. the discussion answered my issue which was the heat off the exhaust. in fact after a 7 hour ride on my can-am, the heat was so intense that i got a serious blister on the calf..:scary:. The header tape and the ways to apply it helped loads.

Thank god you bumped this thread. I couldn't remember who it was that built that badass clean *** f**k 400 that I saw awhile back on here. I thought it was IMSROLL450R but after I looked through his build I knew it wasn't his. Sweet 400 honda_runner!

In the future if your header is looking old and crusty just use a handheld grinder with a wire cup wheel on it, polish it out as even as possible then scrrub it with 000 or 0000 steel wool soaked in wd40, SOS pads and brillo pads will also work.

What's that box beside your air box where the voltage rectifier usually mounts?
