Ok just a quick question,

my buddy has a ltr 450 with 13:1 piston, stage 2 cam, and full lrd exhaust.....
well, they have been talkin lots of crap about no one can beat them.
since im in the process of rebuilding i was just wondering if this is even possible on a diy scale with a 400ex.....
beating them on an ex would mean ALOT..

is this possible? (without breaking the bank)

Show them ericcrips video of him beating sportbikes and 450s....lol.

Build your bike like a drag bike with off road shocks, you will atleast keep up with them.

Also if you had paddle tires you could really mess with there heads, traction is king in any race.

Ive beatin ltr's with mods like that many times.

I agree with John, if you're that stuck on drags you might as well set your bike up for it. But if you ride trails, odds are you're faster than he is day-to-day riding already.

How big's your bank?

Either a High comp 440 big bore (12:1+) or a stroker.

+1mm valves, Web Cam of your choice, hardened rockers, TI springs, etc.

HD cam chain, HD studs or SS inserts for strength.

Serious head porting/polishing/valve job

41mm FCR carb w/ no airbox setup

Sparks Full system

Shaved flywheel, etc.

If you're willing to put the $1500 or so into your motor, you could probably come close or beat him... or you could just sell the 400 and get a 450 that will run with him. Your call.

you wont be able to beat him unless you drop like 1500 to 2000 and do the work your self, better to spend 1,000 and run just behind him and be like i spent half of what you paid and your not that fast...thats an emotional scar....

Pick up an Outlaw 525 and throw the 400ex plastics on it.

that is so funny i did not spend that much on mine and im killing them. $129. for the cam $136 for the carb. $225. for the p&p head work $185 for the 440 wiseco 12.5.1 and cly came with it already deck .025. $44 for the 450r timming chain $200 for the hmf full pipe. and i put it together my self. all for the low price of $919. and just look at the videos and it shows what it will do. next we are going to add +1mm valves. all my parts came from ebay. also it fun to beat up on the 450s and say i did it with a old 400ex cuz every one knows how bad the 450s are. that just my take on it.

They make a 500 kit too. Just because someone offers it doesn't mean it works well. Besides, the head is the heart of any build. Without the proper headwork/cam setup, any quad will be choked as ****. Doesn't matter how big you bore it out to.

Honestly guy if your wanting to beat these guys 440 high vompression is not your best bet. I had a 440 and a stage 2 hotcams port and polish the works you name it was done. Your not going to do it short of boost. Also a 416 or 426 with lower compression 10 to 1 will smoke a 440 with high compression I know this because I have raced them 416 and 426 are a faster 400. My opinion with a 400 is pipe and cam only. You will be most happy here it wont run hot and you can go have fun. No matter who you are theres always someone faster. Theres more to riding than just a drag. If you want to beat them. Buy a banshee build it up, but good luck turning. But if you want to waste your money and then realize you could have bought a 450 for the money you threw down do it. Thats what I did, you live and learn.

look man if you want to beat them it can be done. and not cost you alot. my 440 run great and it dont run hot or have any probs like some of these guys are saying. hell i just got the nos set up right on friday. it raned so we did not run at the track. but we did run it here at the house we have the 1/8 mile marked off to test and tune and some time street race. and man that thing is sweet. we are spraying 3, 4, and 5th gear and she is moving now. like john said look at my videos. 450r , 700 rappys and a can-am 450 went down and some street bikes. and the work we did to the motor is at the bottom. so it can and has been done.
