Starting to get to the motor part of my son's Walsh CRF build. But what do you check on this motor...if it is not in a bike/quad?

Without taking it apart?
Or if I remove certain parts easily, can I check things out?
Does a leak down test still work on these 4-pukes?
How can you tell a crank seal is bad?

Sorry for sounding dumb, but I am used to 2 stroke motors...this is going to be the first 4 stroke in the garage.

have someone check the valves, just the clearances and the thickness of the shims. This will tell alot, it can also tell the condition of the cam chain. If the guy says the valves are near the end of its life, you know the cam chain is next and it cost you ~$1200 to repair/replace whats worn.
