fist off. how do ALL the 450 carbs differ from each other?
will they ALL fit with having to do the similar mod?
also is there a way to tell if your ex "needs" or could benefit from the up grade?

yours will deffinetly benefit from it, the only mod you have to do for the 05 450r carb is the hotstart, 450 throttle and cable, and a $4 rubber plumbing fitting from lowes or homedepot or ace harware.

but yours will deffinetly benefit from it, everyone now is saying that a fcr carb is best, Im actually gonna buy one to see for my self?

Im not 100% on needing the throttle, I bought one any way, but you will need the cable for sure, I plugged my hotstart with RTV, but some prefer to buy the parts, RTV in almost free, the hot start parts cost around $25 I believe.

The biggest fcr is 41mm, the 05 450r carb is a 42mm.

The fcr is on a few different models, if you go to ebay, and look up fcr carb, a bunch will pop up.

04-05 450r carbs are 42mm carbs.

The 06+ 450r is a 40mm FCR- identical to what is found on the CRF450R

You would benefit more from the 06+ carb just because of the diameter. A 460 stroker would make good use of a 42mm carb, but unless you are going to have it pinned at WOT almost all the time, the 40mm would show a greater performance increase over a broader, more usable RPM range on your build... Plus there is no hotstart to worry about. You just need an 06 450r throttle cable.

Another option is the 39mm FCR off of the YFZ. People use those more often than any other from what I've seen.

Yes the 450 carb dose add some power, but the best thing was the throttle response. No more feeling like a dog and sluggish throttle. With the stock carb I felt like I was riding a tractor. The 450 wakes it up nicely.

also i think the fcr carb is a flat slide, not sure though.

ok, thanks everyone for the information!
so a yfz will work and its a 39mm? is this all years? and is it a fcr?
a 06+trx if a FCR model that is 40mm... which from what i read on the trx450 side is a great upgrade for even the 04-05 42mm.

Yes a YFZ carb will work, any year besides the YFZ450R models that are fuel injected. Yes it is an FCR carb.

Do yourself a favor and just hold out for an FCR. There will not be a difference in price if you shop around. I got my 2006 CRF450R carb for around $120. Got a cable for it for $9. I had to watch eBay, but you can snag one cheap. $129 is less than the >05 450r carbs are going to cost you. (plus you still need to adapters to make it fit, the throttle cable, hot start plug, etc.) Actually, I saw a member on here selling a YFZ carb with a throttle cable to fit the 400ex for $150.

And again, you will have better throttle response with a 39mm or a 40mm than any other.

Don't get set on any one carb in particular. The RMZ450, CRF, 450R, or YFZ would work. Keep your eyes open.

Edit:

I did find a couple older 450 carbs for cheaper than I thought they went for ($100), but you could sell your stock carb for $60. That would make up the difference imo.

Hope this helps.

EDIT AGAIN:

none of the damn links work still. If you're interested in anything you see above, pm me and I can send you the link.

I think the YFZ cable will work for you. You can use the stock 400ex thumb throttle.

Yeah, I'm using a CRF450R carb and am still using the thumb throttle, it goes together without a hitch.

As far as I know, they never switched the carbs. Any cable 04-08 should work.

are you using the cable from the honda?
i'm guessing ALL the 450's using a FCR carb mount TO the carb the same??
my concern is if i buy a YFZ's cable that it will not thread in to the thumb throttle so should i find a cable that was for a honda 06+ 450?

I am using the 06 450r cable.

I would guess they connect to the carb the same, too. However the YFZ cable will fit. There is a member on here named 400man that bought a 39mm FCR with a YFZ cable on his. (He is one among dozens)

You ought to be able to use a 450r cable if you are nervous about it though.

The throttle sensor is separate... the carb doesn't need it to run. I've never tried, but the sensor does come off. You might want to get a little piece of rubber or something to plug the hole up so you don't get dirt in the carb.
