250x 3rd gear messed up...

hi, i just traded a old trx250 utility quad for a 87trx250x only problem with it is the 3rd gear is a bit messed up... you can go in it.but if you give it alot of gas it doesnt do anything. The guy told me it was the shift fork??.... does anyone know what is wrong.

It could be a shift fork, but i can't really tell without being there or driving it. ON the 87's 2nd gear would sometimes go bad, but not really sure on why it's 3rd. Go buy a manual, rip it apart and see what's inside.:confused2 <--i like the new smilies.

It could be any number of things from the shift fork to the gear the only way to find out it to take it apart and see for your self. Its not that hard to take apart as long as you have a manual handy and the tools to do it with. If I would have had all the parts and a good impact wrench I coulda done mine in about a weekend and still had time to ride around some. So its not that hard just as long as you have some mechanical know how.

thanks for the info guys........ im going to order a clymer manual. i just rode it.....it starts to go in 3rd then past half throttle it sounds liike **** and grinds....lol every other gear works great though.

That could be either a bent shift fork or a striped gear. Hard to tell which it is just hearing about it. Keep up posted on whats goin on. Oh yea by the way nice bike. Later dude...:chinese: RANDOM ASIAN GUY!!!!

here are some more pics of it...... the guy gave me a spare motor that is taken appart.... i dont know if the 3rd gear in it is good or not...he said it wasnt .so who knows.

that appears to be an 87 model...those things have all kinds of tranny problems...you will need to buy an update kit from honda

i would buy it....but if anything im going to fix the motor first. I will be fixing all this after i put my Z400 together...i recently had the frame gusseted....just need it painted now. then it will be together...and i will start working on the x.

I just got it the other night.........havnt even ridden it ...... i rode it around my yard today...and the 3rd gear is def. messed up.
so its not like I messed it up....

sorry not for sale. the tires will go on my Z400...... that pipe in the pic is for my Z400 also.... i do have a stock 250x exhaust but i do want to hold on to it . the plastic is staying till i buy new ones.

I have a 1987 250x that I am partig out. The top end is in need of new valves and a cam, but the bottom end is fine. I also have every other part. If you need the grab bar let me know. Like $13 shipped for it. Make me an offer on anyhting.

how much for just the bottom end ?
