no way not even close. i had a 2006 baja 650 x model and i always race my friend. the it has around 38 hps but it does have more torque. so for hill clims or in the sand and trails it works good. the problem on the ds. is the rev box it only revs to 8000.
you can buy a box. change your gear ratio. put a pipe and jet it and you can now beat any stock 450. you can also make hps on the chain. the stock on is 530 its real nice bullet proof but heavy.

i thing that the older models are slower then the new ones.

what kind of riding are you going to do??

then you will be just fine. remember to keep that atv as lite as posible. dont put on it a bunch of things you dont need. cause that is one heavy quad.
you can save some lbs on the bars. steel vs aluminum

same thing on the nerf bars.

get a pipe for sure.

dont get real big tires. 21s on the front and 20s on the rear.

stock top speed is about 77 mph with a pipe and air filter, taller tires and gears a DS650 will get up in to the 90+ mph real easy. I know on the sand highway at Glamis my DS730 gets into the high 90's range. I have had the lens of my goggles push in to my face.

i'm geared a little slower than stock. 15 39. and am setup for torque. out of the hole. but because i rev to almost 9 grand. i can still hit high 80's. i would add a vortex, , big gun, or ron woods box and a high comp piston. and a high flow filter. the stock exhaust is hard to beat. but a rear slip on like the yosh is best. but the last thing i would change. alot of people say the 520 conversion is not worth it. stock chain will last along time. just add a alum rear sprocket and it weighs the same as the conversion.

another thing that helped me in the woods. i took a set of old foot pegs
and welded them on the end of mine, kicked up 45 degrees. really help's to push it around.

aluminum sproketes are the worst thing to put on a quad. unless you ride a in the supercross and replace it every week.f

i now know that a cheap chain is the way to go i do replace them often. this is only for mx. i can buy 4 to 5 sets at the prize of one

maybe on a 520, but my 530 alum sprocket lasted months befor i switched. and a cheap chain breaking, can do alot more damage. my alum sprocket was 40 $ from ebay. a x-ring chain 75 $. the sidewinder conversion kit is almost 400. and i personally don't think the trade off is worth it. steel or alum, the 530 is much more reliable.
i'm not trying to pi$$ anyone off. its just that i think there is more to gain cheaper elsewhere. i spent 180 $ at a machine shop and had 14 mm shaved of the flywheel hub, and 3/16 off the flywheel. and beleave me it made a huge difference. i just didn't notice any diference between 530 and 520. thats all

on a ds i would keep it on a 530 stock. but on all the 450s i go with non o ring. i had aluminm sprokets last less 5 rides.

so here is a good point you are supose to change chain and sproket at the same time when one of those fail.
and the aluminum sproket will last alot less.
so i does not matter to have a nice chain.
and the other mistake we all do is we never replace that stock chain cause we thing its never going to break.
and thats how i see at the track lots of broken cases.

to me the hot set up is to go with lite steel sprokets and a non o ring chain and replace it more often. just my 2 cents.
you get me??

so what "actual" chain would you recommend? I mean name and part numbers?? I am looking for a different chain over the stock one I have. I run Sidewinder sprockets and will not run anything else until I am convinced they will last longer. I'm not worried about the weight. I weigh 225 and the extra pound of any of the above won't bother me.

I shaved weight in tires and shocks.

Thanks, Craig

one lb is alot on some thing that is moving. not the same as some thing on your quad.

you can get the o ring if you dont want to replace too often.

or a regular chain to make every bit of horse power.

its the little things that make you win races.

it your choise they are all good. but i will never buy a sidewinder chain. i like the gold non o ring chains for $40. and you should always have one extra.

oh one more thing i like that c clip chains. there is time where the stock ones are press in.
how is that fast motor doing

Motor is working great. So far I am 3 for 4 on holeshots. The last race was a 14 quad gate. I scrubbed the take off in the last moto and came out 4th out of the 2nd turn. Within 1/2 lap I was up front. Then my dumb *** stalled it and was passed by 2 guys. I got it re-started, passed one of them back and literally pushed the guy that won the moto through the finish line.

I understand what you mean in regards to one pound being a lot in rotational mass. You also have to remember though that the bigger something is in diamter, exponentially, the more it affects it's turning mass. A sprocket, being small like it is will have a lot less dramatic affect (one way or the other) weight wise than a tire. I switched to running the ITM Quad Cross lite "pro's" and cut weight instantly. I am keeping one set of tires for "just racing." They get taken off for practice.

So again, who makes what chain???
