we were riding along and his bike stopped shifting. We could get it from neutral to 1st, but not through any other gears. Any solutions? thanks for any help.

bent shifting fork, or fork rod,(the shaft that holds the fork)

your going to have to split the cases and see what happened. you should be able to spot it right off..

will this be a very costly repair?

Wont be that costly.. just very time consuming. You could probly pick up a used part for under $30 and then you will need new gaskets and seals since you will be pulling the motor apart, then fresh oil.

so will i need a complete gasket kit or a top end gasket kit? I will most-likely give it a fresh rebuild while im at it. Piston, rings, etc..

just replace all the gaskets, your going to have to pull the cylinder and head off then remove side cases clutch basket etc split the engine cases replace the bad part, then put it all back together, so u will pretty much have the whole motor tore apart and while your in there u might as well replace crank bearings and anything else thats worn so u dont have to rip it apart again later
