so according to the serials, they built about

21,000 in 1986
8400 in 1987
9400 in 1988
? in 1989

Not as many as I would have guessed

honda probably sold easy 10x more 250r parts than all the 250r's they sold. Look at what was the racing machine until 05, a 250r of some sort, usually with a aftermarket frame and bare minimum of stock parts. The stock parts probably were mostly the engine, calipers, spindles, seats, tanks and nuts/bolts.

that MAC dizzy web site will tell you exactly what you need to know. assuming it is the original case. there is a ton of great info on that site though. but that is not an r motor if thats the engine number. r motors start with tbo6e-10,80,81,or82.10 is 86, 80 is 87, 81 is 88 and, 82 is 89. I guess that could be an atc motor not sure about they're numbers. but in stock form they run stronger than trx.

I have his motor apart on my bench...I have that opinion as well that it may be an ATC bottom end. The top end is far from stock at this point...He purchased this bike for his boy and recieved an extra top end that has old school JD stamp on the side with porting large enough for a rat to climb through!! I will get him to post pictures of the port work.

I seem to remember someone saying you can identify the barrel by the stamps on the sleeve??? Not that it matters, at this point he's thinking about running the MacDizzy 270 set up.

if its original sleeve it should have the year stamped in it o believe. there are also some other slight differences. does the piston have a window for intake or a half moon cut out in it? window is 86 half circle is 87 on

If the ID number starts with a 2 it's an ATC motor.

Half circle....From what i can tell it's a mismatch of ATC and TRX. I ran my degree wheel on it and someone set this up to breathe but not over the top. Headed to the machine shop to punch it out and consider decking the bottom to lower the port tiing or going with a long rod to help the mid just a little. He has another punched out cylinder that can be used as his boy gets use to the bike and wants more top end.

Thanks for the info guys!
