i have been ride for a long time but don't work on them much but trying to save money my 2001 400ex when i start to go the axle moves back and forth does this mean the bearings are out if so how hard are they to change for someone that don't work on them much sorry for the stupid ?

Here's a guide on how to take everything apart, it's not very hard to do. The bearings are only 40$ or so and if you have all the right tools then you're set. Just to be safe you should get a locking axle nut to prevent future problems.

Just went through and replaced mine. One bearing was completely shot and fell apart when I pulled the axle out. I had to cut the outer race out of the carrier with a dremal tool. I got the new bearings and seals on Amazon.com for $25 shipped to my door. It took about 4 days to arrive and about 30 minutes to completely reassemble my quad.
