I want honest opinions here what's should run in an all out drag race a 250r with just a pipe and jetting or a stock 450? I ride with mostly 400exs and whip them I then drag raced a ds450 slipped into neutral and had to go around a ditch and still was only about 3 lengths behind him. I felt like a fool if I gave excuses so I just said ya you won. I'm trying to get my carb dialed in now (which I have another post on all help appreciated) and I'm gonna give him Hell next time. so let's here it.

Well I think it comes down to the.........
1-rider
2-what type of terrain are you racing on
3-what mods are done to the machine
4-tires.........(they play a big part too)

I raced some 450's and waxed them............and I raced some and got waxed.

piped and jetted 250 will lose, a minimum to even hang with the 450's are porting, large carb, pipe, reeds. My bike, when it had these mods(and a few others) would actually smoke 04 05 450rs, but my buddy's 06 with a muffler and jetted would be anybody's race, depending on who got the hole shot. And, I think if I road his bike, I could have beat my 250r every time....... Keep that in mind, especially when those are probably extremely under powered compared to the newer 450s.

agrees.. hate to say it.. and i have had 4 250r's and 2 trx450r's and a piped and jetted 250r will not beat a stock 450.. but a well built 330+ that is tuned in and rode well will beat most 450rs that are even piped ported bigger carb etc.... but the 450r has over 20 years technology on the 250r and i think if 1 of each were equally built the 250r will win.. anyways goodluck and show them 4 pokers whats up if they beat ya on the straights get em on the track or trails and then see whats up.. :D

You can still build your stock cylinder bike to be extremely competitive with the 4 strokes though...
I would also say go with high compression/ porting... race gas is expensive, but hands down wakes your bike up something fierce....

My stock cylinder little stroker motor has no problems with the 450's i've come up against, unless they are 500 big bores...

even with slipping into neutral and having to avoid a ditch I was still creaping up on him in the end maybe he was already slowing down not sure but it was Probly over a 1/4 mile drag. is our top speed higher than theirs maybe?

I bet the top speeds are all pretty similiar with stock gearing, but i don't know to many stock 250rs that could take total advantage of their 6th gear without bogging down (i'm talking sand). There are to many variables with sprocket gear ratios to know whos is faster on top...

I totally SMOKED all the 4pokes one weekend with my 86ATC. It got the long rod,ESR CR250 ignition, Cool head with 19cc dome, V-force 2 reeds,Keihin 36mm Air Striker carb, DG exhaust, and UNI air filter and no porting at all. You dont need much to go fast

The 250r was never designed to to go fast in a straight line. Its power to weight and handling makes it shines in a mx atmospere. Though you can get a lot of straight line power from 250cc, you best bet is to build a bike for what you want to do. As stated earlier, going fast is about many things like rider, weight, hp, etc. If your intent is to beat all these 4 stroke guys in a drag, build a banshee. Speed cost money, with a banshee you can get more hp for the $$$, they go straight really well, and will leave mostly anything behind...

did we ever get an answer to exactly what type of race this will be?

as stated the R can hang in straight line.... but its untouchable once the curves or jumps start

sorry I just wanted to hear what more experienced riders had to say. and like I said it wouldn't bother me if it want for my obstacles and his trash talking. and also wanted to find out what it would take to compete with these machines. so sorry for "internet racing"
