Hello guys, glad to finally be onboard. It took 2 weeks to get my registration email, but I’m on now.

I have been reading and searching about the 300ex to 400ex a-arm conversions, and have a question.

What is the cost benefit of doing the conversion? After you buy the 400ex arms, spindles, rods, shocks, and relocating bracket; where is the savings over 300ex + arms?

Anyways I want to see what you guys think of my new purchase. I have been quad-less doing some diving for the past 3 years. I did a bad job of checking out an 87 250x, and bought a bigger project then I wanted. I noticed the front a-arms have been home modified as well as the back swing arm. Take a look at the pictures.

What do you recommend I do to make it right? The back has a Durablue axle, so I think I should try and keep the front wider. There are works shocks all around, but I have no clue what size they are. I have a small budget, so what do you think?

Also check out the Carb…what do you think it is? A dirt bike carb? The motor was built by four-stroke tech, and reverse and 1st was taken out by Mickey Dunlap. I have no paperwork on the build so I have no clue what’s inside. I tried switching back to a thumb throttle, but the carb is not compatible. And I am assuming the stock 250x carbs are not enough for a built engine.

Arrrggggghhhhh..what to do???

i did the 400ex arm swap on my 300 to make it wider. my ball joints were shot so thats why i did the swap.

some benefits are the 400 front end i believe is 1.5in wider on each side so 3in wider then stock 300 and plus you get the advantage of longer travel front shocks over the dinky *** 300 shocks.

also i have a 300ex carb with the thumb throttle and cable still attached if u need it.

the 400 a arm upgrade will be cheaper 99.99% of the time. any aftermarket a arm is expensive (unless the are beat and bent). and shocks arnt cheap either. for my swap (not including spindles) cost me just under $150. just look around.

also for your rear end, look into doing a 450 swap. you will get the extended swinger, better shocks, and a wider axle. just a thought

Thanks for the input so-far guys.

I will have to do some searches about the 450 swing arm, but I like my rear works shock just fine. I would assume it is better then the stock 450 one.

Also any ideas on the carb? Would the stock one be bad for a built motor. Going to try and call four stroke tech today and see if they can look up my motor...It's worth a try.

After some research I think I found out what the carburetor is.

I think it is a mikuni 32mm from powroll. (bottom of this page) http://www.powroll.com/P_HONDA_TRX250X-300EX.htm

Only thing I don't get , is why it looks ghetto rigged in there. If they sell it for a 250x/300ex why the funky set-up?

Now I just need to find a compatible thumb throttle cable :)

As stated before I have no reverse in my quad. I was changing out handlebars the other night and I broke the clutch perch.

Can anyone recommend a cheap perch without a parking brake lever? Would any dirt bike one work? I noticed there is not a lot for ATV’s.

Like this?

Yes, any lever / perch should work from a quad or dirt bike. I would look at ASV or MSR or you could probly get a stock CRF honda lever off ebay for cheap-er. My cluch lever and perch is off a Z400.
