electrical problem

I just bought an 87 250x and it randomly will start sometimes but most of the time it wont. I checked to see if theres spark and there wasnt. Its like it gets spark sometimes tho cause it will start right up sometimes. Once the bike is started, I can turn it off and start it right up. Any ideas on what the problem is? thanks.

Yeah i just went out and it randomly had spark and it started right up. But while I was riding it after about 5 min it would just die on me. I could start it but then it would die again in like 15 sec. It like kept loosing spark.

sounds like a stator. Usually when the coil or CDI goes out they go but a stator can be intermitten like that.

ok yeah thats kinda what i was thinking. Does anyone knoe how to test that?

Also i just found out the key isnt hooked up. What is the purpose of the key if theres no battery?

the key does the same as a kill switch. Unhooked is OK.

The only way I know to test a stator is to put it on another quad.

yeah i think i figured it out. When we tap on the cdi box the bike stalls and acts funny. Now i just need to find one for a 250x.
