So I'll be getting my KFX400 on thursday night and I'm thinking of a few cheap mods for it, starting with exhaust & intake. I heard Zs, KFXs and DVXs are very restricted and modding the carb and intake would make a significant change to the quad.

I want to take the whole airbox assembly out of mine but I want to know if anyone else did this? I never had problems with my 300EX and it ran without a airbox for 3 years.

Anyone have pics of a Z without a airbox??

its not as much the air box as the intake itself that's so restrictive

I have a 400ex air boot, lid off, fmf header and Lexx slip-on - rejetted to 150 / 25 and there is a huge difference.

No such things as cheap mods for the Z unless you just remove the airbox lid and re-jet....if you want to run a open air filter setup your going to need to run a good intake boot and a bigger carb otherwise dont waste your time and money..... the stock 37mm carb is only going to do so much with an open filter, it like the pipe is very restrictive after 7500 rpm and a bit before....... what kind of budget do you have to mod your Z? and maybe we can recommend the best mods for your budget.....

here is a pic of a decent intake boot and carb for the Z .

Money isnt too much of a problem, and I dont want to do things the half assed way. The quad already has a RS-3 slip-on and I'm thinking to get a RS-5 headers - if it fits - or a RS-3 headers. Then I plan on buying a 38-40mm FCR carb, and possibly custom build an intake tube from stainless. I'm at professional school and we have machining and welding classes so bending, welding the intake and having parts machined wont be a problem. :)

If you read below this, you can see what mods and the power i made on the dyno.. My cdi box is a cheap one, if you get the good one i should be able to see at least 1 hp gain... Just to give you an idea on what it took for me to get that kind of hp

And i do run the stock box, but very modified, with no lid and the filter takes up the entire thing. (basically touches both sides and stick out of the top a little bit)
