I could never do good wheelies until I got the 400. A week after I got it we went on a ride and i was on a gravel road next to a good friend when I just picked it up and road it for what seemed like forever. When we came to our next stop he pulled off his helmet and asked "when the hell did you learn how to wheelie?" haha I have gotten pretty good at it and can wheelie through gear changes. He has a Polaris Outlaw 500 (with independent rear suspension) and cant do wheelies to save his life. The 400 just has the sweet spot for wheelies.

you are so right the 400 ex are great to do you first wheelie on just pop the clutch and hit the gas and your off to a sweet ride.

haha imo the 400ex is one of the most balenced quads there is when i had my first 400ex i was 12 and thought i was good when i could put my foot on the grab bar and ride wheelie 100ft in 2gear now im doin 4th and 5th gear wheelies down the road and just having fun playin around lol i still dont consider myself good but it seems like some of the ppl i ride with think im pretty good

I can only do it in 1st gear so far with my left foot on the grab bar so I guess thats my favorite one. I don't have much space where I'm at, maybe 150-175 yards so I might be able to do some second gear stuff eventually. I'm still having a hard time finding the balance point. I always either go too far and end up standing the quad straight up and I just end up stepping off, or I don't get it high enough and I end up revving it out to keep it up.

Any gear will do. Multiple changes in one wheelie is my favorite.

I guess I really do need to practice.

06-09-2010, 08:49 PM
use the back break to help u from going to high just easy on the break not to hard and it will help you set it up. for a long wheelie.

06-10-2010, 07:26 AM
If u just started it will take a while to get the hang of it

Thats the safe way to start with one foot on the grab bar and one on the brake then u can do standing or sitting wheelies with both feet on the pegs and then start shifting

Once you get the hang of going through the gears while doing a wheelie , then the next challenge is to gear down while you slow down while you keep it up. Gaining speed is easy, slowing down is much more difficult.

Any gear will do for me, slow or fast it’s all good.

i like 1st and 2nd, havent been able to make myself power shift though. and i sometimes do it with my right foot on the grab bar, my left knee wont allow that one to happen, so i tought myself with no back brake just play with the throttle. for me its the most fun when you land a jump and just rack on it, ends bad sometimes, lol.

honda400ex2003

i use my clutch all the time. i would never power shift on a wheelie lol. steve

the foot on the grab bar is a bad idea. i had a warrior and i was doing that. when i went a little too far and it hit the grab bar, it twisted and flipped about 4 times..one bent a-arm later, i realized that sitting down is the best option :). and 5th gear wide open is my favorite gear for the wheelies :) :)

I've tried this and it doesn't work. I stunted street bikes for awhile and if you clutch when you shift it takes precise timing and you must be at balance point or higher.

It's must easier to predict what the quad is gonna do if you just shift it up there, if you try to use the clutch you engage it in neutral and then you have to do the whole clutch disengage shenanigans (transfering the power back to the wheels after they're spinning freely in neutral). it's not a good method on a quad, just jam i tup there and be ready for a little lift haha.

I can pop it up in first and shift it with no clutch all the way to 5th gear with no problems on my wheelies.

Something to consider......The faster you go, the less high up your wheelie is going to be. Slow controlled wheelies are the hardest to do, and i think wheelies over 35 mph are just a piece of cake although super fun.

Basically, if you can ride a sit down wheelie in first gear for 100yards or more.....you've got it mastered!

i dont pop my clutch to wheelie either so if you can do both you are good to go. I havent really wheelied too much anymore it is hard to find time and a decent place to do them. the neighbors dont really like when i wheelie past their houses so i like to go slow. lol. steve

when i wheelie i tend not to use the clutch just let off the throttle grab a gear and get back in the throttle its quicker and seems to work better for me

Sounds like most of the other ppl on here do to

im not even coordinated enough to shift while doing a burnout, let alone doing 50 mph on the back wheels. lol

I was outside today and went from 1 side of the field to the other (about 150 yards) in 1st with my left knee on the seat. I need to practice getting it up in second now I guess, it might be easier at higher speeds, but its gonna hurt a lot more WHEN I fall.

I love pulling it up in 5th at 50 or 60 and just cruising on a wheelie.

The best is when you attempt to steer on a wheelie by shifting weight to one side of the quad or the other.

Here is one of my videos, taken when I thought I was invincible and didn't need a helmet. After breaking my back, I wear mine all the time now.

really? you must not have read the whole thing or missed a page. some of us do, others dont. there is a bit of discussion on it in here. steve

Hi everyone!I'm new and I write from italy so sorry for my bad english...with my stock 400ex i can wheelie in 1 and 2 gear and shift using the clutch to 5 gear....many times i read that is possible to wheelie without popping the clutch in 3,4 or 5 gear...there is a particular tecnique or my 400 has any power issue??

U shouldnt have any power issue
go down the road in third or fourth and lean forward to get the front shocks to compress then pull back and the rebound from the suspension should get u up then u find the balance point and away u go haha

If I'm cruising at a decent speed in 5th I just get into a higher rpm range by speeding up or down shifting then just snap the throttle and pull it up that way.

2nd through 5th, but nothing like pulling it up in 5th and just cruising:D

Stock gearing now...I tried to drop a tooth in front but don't change almost nothing except yhe speed so turned it stock...

well what yr is it they did change gearing i think it was 05 and up droped a tooth on the front

its a 2006...could be the shocks???I mounted 450r shocks i think are more heavy than stock and are not so sprung...

MidnightBlade
06-13-2010, 08:06 PM
in 05 they dropped a tooth in the front and added a tooth in the back. the 450 shocks dont help much either, they are taller and make the front sit higher. it sounds wrong but it is true. the yfz 450 shcks are short and pull up easy, i have no idea why. lol

today i tried to switch to stock suspension...the handling suck but is more simple to wheelie and stoppie!!!I can wheelie in third also but only popping the clutch...using only the throttle required a lot of practice, but is possible!!!now i want a set of fox float:D :D :D

PaRedneckRiders
06-14-2010, 07:24 AM
ya i wouldnt mind having a set either but for now ill keep stock then ill upgrade to prob yfz shocks
I might b picking up another 400ex later this week

i luv doing slow wheelies but i also like to hit 3rd gear wheelies so i guess ill go inbetween and say 2nd

PaRedneckRiders
06-14-2010, 06:02 PM
i really think slow wheelies take more skill if u can feather the clutch and control the back brakes and just creep along really slow but its not as fun as pullin up a 50mph wheelie haha
