i have been looking at motorcycles lately, and probably gonna buy one come fall, when i have the money. i have been looking at bikes similar to the suzuki bandit 650, and also supermoto bikes. i was thinking of something like the suzuki DRZ400SM.

anyone on here own a supermoto? they arent very common in my area, so i havent been able to talk to someone who owns one to see if they like it. do you like it? pros/cons?

i just have a few basic questions for now.

how does it ride? offroad, i have only ridden atv's, so if it compares to a dirtbike, like i think it will, then it will be a new experience. as for the road, i ride a 1982 honda nighthawk 450.

how hard it is to convert a dirtbike, or lets say smr's dual sport, into a supermoto?

would the suzuki 400 be enough, or should i go bigger?

my buddy has a drz400s
It is his street and trail bike and its alot of fun
He just has a slip-on hmf sport but it runs good with the taller gearing thats on it will do like 108mph but still has the power to pull itself through tight trails

I really like it its a little heavier than im used to because im used to the lighter aluminum framed bikes ie: cr250/crf250r

but there really nice and have good power and top speed there a great all around bike for what we do here in southwestern PA
Not sure how your terrain is in Kentucky but it should still b a great bike

DRZ400S is the same as the DRZ400E. Only difference is the street package. Great off road bike. Most poeple just replace the tires with street tires.

The yamaha 250 is also an also dual sport for offroad riding.

I know a guy that works at a local atv shop, He has a drz400sm with 50,000 miles on it. He rides his year round. He has had no problems with the motor.

if i were to buy a bike for the street, i'd go with the ktm525 and convert it to street use. the engine is a powerhouse, and extremely reliable.

I bought a dirtbike and converted it over. That's not that big of a deal. But same bike, and I converted it to street legal, and what a pain that was. There are plenty of kits to aid in the convertion process, but they won't help you when fighting with the courthouse and sending off for a title, etc. There are plenty of bikes floating around already done up, so just keep your eyes open and it will save a lot of time and money. I would do it different if I could go back.

As far as what size/type of bike, that depends on what type of riding you plan on doing/miles/speed/roads.

It's fairly wicked after a few slight mods. I'm not sure how anyone could ride one of these in the woods.

i will mostly just be on back roads, and just a 55 mph straight road. very little interstate. most of the places i go are only 5-10 miles away.

A 400 would be fine then, and some of those 250s are pretty bad too. The thing I like the most about the 400s are how durable they are.

i converted a yz426 to supermoto and its a blast. dont waste your time with a drz400sm. you will out grow the power in like 10 minutes. in ohio its super easy to get a street title for a dirt bike i just had to sign a paper saying it was up to dot standards, they didnt even inspect it. you can pic up a yz426 pretty cheap and have less than a grand in converting it. i think i had about $900 in converting mine. that was wheels, tires, wr426 stator and a light kit.
