What is the inside of it supposed to look like. i tried to beat the brake side bearing out and the inside of the bearing cracked in 2. The balls fell out but I can't tell if what is left in the carrier is bearing or part of the carrier. Hopefully I will use the grill method for the other 2 tonight.

There should be a lip that the bearings are pressed against. If balls fell out when you took it apart, you will be lucky if the carrier itself isn't damaged.

I cracked mine in two and the balls fell out also. Mine was not damaged but it was a pain in tha ***** to get the outer race of the bearing out. that should be all that is left at least that is what happend to mine. everyone else is right tho if you still have a stock carrier then i would go ahead and but a dual row or double wide machined aluminum one. it is well worth the money in my opinoin and i have heard a few bad things about the burgard carrier. i would go with an rpm it has a grease zerk on the side instead of inside the swing arm housing. check this one out on ebay. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250617219734&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

Got them out. heated to 350 in the oven and got the first sprocket side out undamaged, then the second bearing's outer race broke and everything fell right out. Had to heat it to 400 to get the other outer race out. I really don't have the money to get a new one. I can barely buy the new bearings and oil filters I need. A new carrier will be on my list for improvements when I get some money though.

Just food for thought...

If you replace them when the start to wiggle instead of waiting this long it is much easier to replace. Also, waiting this long, you're begging for the bearing to let go while riding and destroy the carrier (even after market), axle, caliper and brake stay...

There really isn't anything wrong with the stock carrier if you stay on top of the maintenance... Stand on your pegs and rock the quad side to side every once and a while... If you feel any clunks it's time to look at the swing arm and carrier bearings.

Yeah I'm deffinetly paying more atttention to these from now on. I want to get an aftermarket carrier with the zerk because I do a lot of riding in mud and water and thats probaly why these bearings went out so quick. Thanks, I haven't thought about the swing arm bearings, how often do those usually need to be replaced?

When they go bad... There is no time limit on them or any other bearing in the world for that matter... When the go, they go.

Just keep an eye on all of them.

The brake side of the carrier is cracked. It's hard to see in the pictures because they're blurry but I think it's bad enough to need a new one. I've been looking on ebay and I found one. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/NEW-TRX450r-TRX-450-R-HONDA-AXLE-BEARING-CARRIER-450R-_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQhashZitem3a5b91b2aeQQitemZ25064 4378286QQptZMotorsQ5fATVQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

Any crack is bad enough to replace the carrier. Don't take the chance of wiping out the rest of the things I was talking about...

It has double wide bearings, are these easy to find when replacing? If anyone knows of another carrier from $100 to $150 post please.

that thing about having a grease zerk on the side is that you still cant get grease into the balls of the bearing because of the seal. It is a good idea and it still helps some but you are not hitting any of the internals of the bearing like you need to.

Yeah, I think I've read something about the exposed zerk not helping much like you said so I'm just trying to get a decent carrier now. @Baileygunns, can you send those links to my email?

I posted them right here... look up in the posts...

Honestly if you are tight on money... Find a used stock one and put the new bearings you have in it... There really isn't anything wrong with the stock one. Just stay up on the maintenance...

The links wouldn't work. I haven't bought any bearings yet and since bearings cost $50 and a used carrier cost another $50, I might as well get a new one. Thanks

Ahhh.... I thought you already bought bearings to put in the carrier you have...

Email sent...

When you get your new bearings, pick one side of the seals out of the bearings and pack them with grease. If you are careful with taking them out, the seals will pop right back in. They don't come with much grease in them, and adding more will help prolong the life of them.

I've also heard of people taking the inside seal out of the bearings, and installing them without the seal. When you add grease through the zerk, the grease will get to the inside of the bearings. I would rather add the grease before hand though, and have the peace of mind that there is a seal there.

Ordered one from east coast atv last night. Didn't see those boss carriers when I was browsing and didn't get the email till after I ordered. It comes with a lifetime garentee on the housing so we'll see how it holds up. I'll try that next time I get bearings, unless it will be easy to remove the bearings from my new carrier?

I would just wait until you get new bearings. They are very easy to mess up when taking them out.

Got the carrier. Is the divider thing in the middle supposed to be loose?

It will wiggle around a little.
