I bought a used aluminum skidplate for my 88 R, and the lower linkage keeps hitting the plate. I cant even mount it! Are there spacers that are supposed to go in the front?

yes the UM ones had aluminum spacers that went in the front. Its a crappy design and didn't last one race before getting ripped off. I got a PRM one and I'm happy with it. It fits right up against the swingarm.

i have the AC on my 87 and it fits fine (on the stock swingarm). an old co worker had an 88 and bought the same skidplate for his and had the same issue you are describing. he notched it with a hacksaw and it worked fine after that. some AC parts that are listed as 86/87 and 88/89 are actually the same part with a different label. at least that was my exerience with them. i had noticed it with grab bars and skid plates so far.
