met up with some of my zilla brethen off the net again this past weekend. brought the 250R, but fortunately (or unfortunately) the TRX didnt need to get unloaded as the LT-zilla hybrid ran hard and trouble free all weekend so no pics of it.

anyway. Kermit is flat out awesome. the place is HUGE, almost glamis size. way bigger than waynoka.. we were there on memorial weekend and pratically never saw a soul out on our rides..
ENJOY!!

Nice pics, looks like a fun place. Is this a state park? Of so, what's the name of it and is it similar regulations/rules to Little Sahara?

Thanks,
Dan

Found this.

http://www.duneguide.com/sand_dune_guide_kermit.htm

How tall are the larger dunes compared to let's say Buttercup in Waynoka?

Another site states it's 25 square miles and is mostly privately owned. I wonder how that plays into the riding scene. Any first hand knowledge would be appreciated.

well the "who's land is it?" is a big cluster...

as stated the area is huge and so its a mixture of owners. the bottom line is that you can ride out there - no problems. for FREE i might add. The issue (sorta) is where to park. The area is rich with oil, so there are alot of pumpjacks around the perimeter and those pumpjack pads are where you can park. Some of the oil lease people are nice and find with the quads, some are feed up with the BS and dont want people parking there. Plus you can park in the front at KSI - more on that below.

This is my version of the story that I have picked up - alot of it is filtering through peoples opinions and whatnotand if anyone has better information - feel free.

The area first started out as a city park for 20 years at least. then back around 2003 a guy bought the front portion of the dunes and city park. Now this is where things got screwy - you have to understand 2 entirely different opinions here. 1 group has been riding the hills for 5-10-20 years for free (West Texas Duners, WTD)and another group says KSI (Kermit Sandhills Inc) owns the dunes and so they are entitled to $$ for dune access.
The next 3-4 years these groups where at odds with each other. KSI put a barbwire fence up in the middle of the dunes to mark off what they considered their area. The local duners tear the fence down for safety. KSI put the fence back up, WTD tears it back down.
WTD are parking along the road and pump jacks, KSI has the sheriff start writing tickets for parking along the round and trespassing on the pump jack pads.

Around 2008 everything calmed down and in some sense KSI gave in to WTD. The sheriff got tired of writing tickets and realized KSI was being a jerk. The fence has stayed torn down. WTD leased a couple pumpjack pads in the far back and that is where the locals go park at. We parked at a pumpjack pad near the front off FM874 for 2 days - no problem. The 3rd day the sheriff came by and told us we couldnt park there. He then offered to take us back to the WTD site. The sheriff was super nice - helped us load up and then took us back to the public site where we rode the 3rd and 4th day. He spoke very negatively of KSI and well about WTD.
So 4 days of camping and riding for FREE. If you want to spend $$, you can park at KSI, but its like $15 to camp, $5 per quad and there are a ton of rules and the owner can be a real A-hole and kick you out.

As for dunes, the area is known as the sandhills and appropriately so. There are no big dunes like the 12 or so in waynoka. There are some decent sized hills. Thing is, the sand is extremely soft, the wind blow alot, and so there area is full of steep and soft razorbacks that can provide plenty of challenge. I hardly ever get stuck at Waynoka or Glamis. I got stuck at Kermit a few times every day. So aside from big dunes, Kermit has tons of small dunes/hills, miles upon miles of trails. just a great place to ride and get lost.

In typical West Texas fashion the area is isolated and hardly anyone is ever out there. And even if they are the area is so huge you wouldnt see them anyway. The first 2 days we were there I would have sworn we were the only ones there. And if it wasnt Memorial weekend the chances are good that we would have been the only ones out there.
The WTD forum is down - hopefully it will get back up soon or I find out the site those guys are hanging out at.

that dune guide link is pratically worthless.
Given all the past drama - I was hesistant to head out there. I used to ride out there in the mid 90s when I was going to TTU so I wanted to check the place out again. But I gave it chance and Im glad I did. We had a blast and everything was fine.

i found this pic, supposedly each square is a square mile. 640 acres in a square mile x 10 squares is 6400 acres give or take how you add up the portions of the squares...
