i dont see how it would be possible for it to be a terrorist attack. There is nothing man made that can go that speed with its own force, such as a missle or something along those lines.

Well its not going to fall in one piece, if it exploded in re-entry then a lot of it would have disentegrated(sp) but there probably could be pieces the size of a car or somethng that could have made it through. They prabably are telling people not to get close to the debris so that people wont pick up smaller pieces and keep them as souvenirs.

It really shouldn't be called "old". If you have ever been there they pretty much strip the whole thing down after each mission and repair and replace everything that could possibly malfunction. It's such a huge process to check over everything it takes close to a month. It was practically new by everything they do to it, that machine is actually safer than our cars.

Hey Hey u know how that nasa officials are saying don't touch the debris because dangerous rocket fule might be left on it. We'll I thought that before re-entry they dump all there fuel in space before re-entry so that just in case if something goes wrong there won't be a huge explosion.

They dump the big external tank before they ever enter space and it burns up in the atmosphere. They don't really use thrusters on reentry, they glide in. Which is why they have to come into the atmosphere at an exact spot so they have time to slow down before they reach the runway.

I heard this go over Dallas this morning. It just sounded like somebody upstairs in my house just dropped something real heavy. The news right now is that a lot of debris is being found in the Palestine, TX, area. This is a sad day indeed. God bless the families of those who lost loved ones in this tragic event.

The reason that they are not suppose to touch the debree is because it may have hydrozene fuel on it which is extremely toxic.

Aircraft and space craft are inspected and basically rebuilt so many times that age is not the controlling factor, it is cycles, or times flown. In aviation terms, that shuttle is still a baby at 28 flights.

Oh god, don't get me started on news reporters like Barbera "speech impediment" Walters and Dan Rather! IS all they do is regurgitate(spel?) what other people say to them even though they might not have know anything about the topic at hand and claim to be doing the public a service. I mean if she wants to do a service why doesn't she come clean my house or pick trash up along a major highway, plant flowers.

I mean for a while the media acted like America would probably die from anthrax-tainted letters and is all the media does is tell people what they want to hear. For instance guess what I saw last night? "machines killing kids". Where is all they did is bash dirt bikes and atvs and blame the manufactures instead of the riders and parents own stupidity. Granted I did think that was sick to go on tv and say you found a arm and leg in your back yard but people talk these reporters up as if they are hero's. *rant off*

reason they dont want people pickin up pieces is the fuel used is very toxic and if you inhale it it forms somethin arouynd your air pockets in your lungs and you will suffocate (sp?) within 48 hours from it SO DONT PICK IT UP OR GO NEAR IT!:D

the size of the shuttle vs the size of the debris....it will take a long time to collect all of it. i bet they will do like they did with TWA 800 and collect and reassemble to figure out what they did wrong. i was watching one show and they were collecting parts from a plane which had debris scattered like this and they were offering a 500 dollar reward for each part found! but i bet they have to wait for the toxins to evaporate before they let the crowd near it. i cant imagine that 'truck bed liner' coming down IN PUBLIC ROADS that fast.... i would be staying indoors :(

lol if you wanna be like that I doubt the space shuttle hit the ground at 12k mph but entered the earths atmosphere at that speed. Really by the time it reaches the ground its gonna be going much slower. Just like the tests where people sky dived at the edge of spaced where they get going up to mach 2 1/3 of the way down and then they start slowing down.

The news said that they were traveling at 12,500 mph when it happened. It also said that they are hitting near 20,000mph, and then they circle the USA four times, doing "banking maneuvers" to slow down.

The people aboard knew of the dangers involved.
