97 Kawasaki zx6r electrical problem

Ok doing a favor for one of my brothers friends.

Come home last night to a motorcycle in my driveway that says "fix me". find out later whose it is and what the problem is.

The brake light stays on even when the key is in the off position. I put it on a charge last night so it would have some juice tonight, but any idea what could cause something like that. Don't mind working on his bike, But i am no good with electrical.

So, where should I put the test light at first?!

Find out if the brake light would come on without the key on. Almost all cars do, most motorcycles wont. Dpending on the answer, that will tell you if you have an ignition problem or a brake light switch problem.

How would I find that out? It is a 97, im going to guess it doesn't have any delays or anything hooked up to the lights, in fact i'm almost positive it wouldn't....
