how much maintenance is required and how often do you actually do the maintenance on ported heads? what type of work do you recommend doing on the head. and is the power increase substantial

There's no extra maintenance associated with a ported head. It's the most reliable power you can add to a motor. Porting a head makes a BIG difference on the 450r, especially the 04/05 heads.

Have been thinking of proting my head on my 05 but havnt had the money to do it yet. From what i have read and understand it is the most significant power increase you can add to your bike.

Porting the head makes a huge difference no matter what year it is. Porting and a cam are great!

YES i put a stage 2 hotcam in mine and it made a huge difference. It seems to just give you that extra torque all the way through the motor.

Porting is the way to go. If you get to extreme, then you are going to spend some time tuning your carb to get it just right and it will become more sensitive to temperature and all that. But besides that you're going to be hanging on tighter!

I switched from a motor with a 13:1 piston to a motor with a 13:1 piston, Stg. 2 Hotcam and a ported head and it made a large difference. I would reccomend it to anyone!
