Secretary of the Interior designates Doc Hilt Trails as National Recreation Trail

06/01/10

Lineville, AL - Doc Hilt Trails in Clay County, Alabama has been officially designated as a National Recreation Trail.

Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar on May 25, 2010 announced the designation of 31 trails in 15 states as national recreation trails, adding more than 716 miles of trails to the National Trails System. The announcement comes in anticipation of National Trails Day on June 5.

“I hope that millions of Americans will take advantage of the opportunities provided by our national trails to embrace a fuller, healthier lifestyle,” Salazar said.

The national recreation trail designation recognizes existing trails and trail systems that link communities (and regions) to recreational opportunities in parks across the nation. The first ones were established in 1971. The national recreation trail program is jointly administered by the National Park Service and the U.S. Forest Service.

Doc Hilt Trails joins a network of more than 1,000 previously designated trails that total more than 12,500 miles.
Note: Doc Hilt Trails is the 2nd private motorized trails park in the nation to receive this designation.

Doc Hilt Trails
Doc Hilt Trail is a private off road recreational trails area and camping facility located just north of Lineville, Alabama, on the eastern edge of the Talladega National Forest. The Doc Hilt Trails system consists of about 17 miles of continuous trails for ATVs, dirt bikes and OHV enthusiasts. The area includes hilly and mountainous terrain with trailside primitive camping. Doc Hilt Trails is dedicated to affordable, rustic and responsible recreational family-oriented trail riding for 4 wheelers and off-road motorcycles. The trail system was created by collaborative efforts between private land owners, the Cheaha Trail Riders Association, and numerous volunteers from Alabama and Georgia.

Gannon Murphy of Doc Hilt Trails said “4 wheelers have been growing in popularity for some time, and 2 seat versions (or more) are especially popular with couples and the 30+ crowd. ATVs allow people to experience the great outdoors and forego the exertion of taking long hikes. Besides, it’s fun, exciting, relaxing, adventurous, soothing and exhilarating all at the same time! We allow traditional 4 wheelers, sport quads, side-by-sides and off road motorcycles on our trails. Doc Hilt Trails offers multi-mile vistas, streams, flora, wildlife, camping, and scenic trails, as well as challenging hill climbs and mud areas for riders.”

“This designation is quite an honor for the park, Clay County, and all of the people involved with making Doc Hilt Trails possible. The park draws people from all around, local as well as from surrounding counties and states, and further. This distinguished designation for Doc Hilt Trails brings national attention to Lineville and Clay County on an ongoing basis, and will prove to be another local attraction that enhances our local economy.”

Doc Hilt Trails is located on Good Hope Rd. in Lineville and open Sat-Sun 8am-7pm. More information and directions can be found at Doc Hilt Trails web site at www.DocHiltTrails.com or call Gannon Murphy at 770-241-3182.
