How easy is it to replace carrier bearing on a 05 450r? And how do you do it?

If you've never done it before, you're in for some fun. (sarcasism)

You will need a propane torch, a BFH, and some sort of punch.

No propane torch!!!

Put it in a bbq grill or an oven. Something to put the heat on evenly. The stock cast carrier is brittle and using a propane torch can soften the metal and make it weak/more susceptible to breakage.

Hmmmn, I shoulda mentioned to use common sense with the torch for the above stated reasons. Also, throw the new bearings in the freezer before installing them. every little bit helps. ;)

Do the grill method..put it in for lk 15 mins and tap it on some wood or something and the bearings will practically fall out. Its easy

If you want to go the easy route just buy an aftermarket billet carrier from ebay.

i agree with rob i would buy a billet one from ebay. they are still tough to get out though with a good punch and old fashioned elbow grease you can have the old ones out and new ones in, in about an hour. im sure that you can still put the billet ones in the grill though and that would make it that much easier.

I actualy just did mine last Saturday... No Joke, 10 minutes. I put the new bearings in the freezer before I pulled the carrier. Put the carrier on the grill and turned it on for a couple min. I think the temp was almost 400. Pulled the carrier out and whacked it down on a piece of 2x4 till the bearing was flush with the outside edge. Then I just shoock it till the collor on the inside knocked the bearing the rest of the way out. Flipped it and did the same thing for the other side... Put the new bearings in ant tapped them down with a big socket and a soft blow hammer.

Like Butter.

What is the advantage and what is the cost of ceramics?? I can't see them being much benefit in a carrier.

have you ever had ceramics? if so, I doubt you would be saying that you see no benefit....

ceramics installed in a carrier/hubs will allow you to push a quad with one finger...

have a nice day!

Are they more or less durable than regular bearings?
