Is parting out really worth the trouble?

Ok I got a 1996 cr125 that needs a new crank, topend, and cylinder head and I dont really want to spend close to $500 on it to get it running again. So after looking at ebay and figuring up some prices I figured I could make about $800 to $900 in all the parts off of it. I could probably only get maybe $350 out of it the way it is. So is parting out really worth driving back and forth to the post office and packaging all the parts to make the extra money? Also taking the risk of being stuck with half a bike.

i part out machines for a living...ill tell you right now...ive had a few crs in that vintage on the shelf in boxes and sold maybe $300 worth of stuff.in 5 yrs.. the rest of it im sure ill die with...best bet would just be to put it on craigslist for 300 and take anything over 200

you can try parting out, hell you might luck out, its worth a shot, i just havent found too many guys in need of old mx bike parts....u could always go bargain hunting and find a rat with a good motor for 4-500 and throw it in your bike, part out the rest of it and maybe cover the costs of what the engine cost u

If you dont mind me asking what is some of the stuff that usually wont sell? I planned on having a bunch of bolts and stuff left over.

Just depends on how much you ask for some of the stuff. If nobody is looking for a part for that 7 days the auction is on, you're stuck. I part a lot of stuff out as well and it's a hassle, listing, recieving the money, shipping, and the whol nine yards. I parted out an older CR250 a couple years ago and bike parts are a lot harder to get rid of than quad parts usually.:rolleyes:

SRH parts out all kinds of bikes for a living...but if you focus on just parting out one bike you may sell more because your only advertising one bike not a bunch...I may be wrong but you know where I'm commin from

keep in mind you cant go with what people on ebay are asking, only what they go for. What I do to check what something is worth is sign in and look at completed listings only, and only prices that are in green sold.

I didn't know you could look at completed listings like that I did think about not paying attention to what they where listed for but what they where actually selling for.

Ok the total of the below list is $1035 but I figure $235 of that for ebay fees and maybe not charging enough on shipping for one or two items and also packing material. Then after that $235 I would have $800 left over. I can sell the bike this weekend for $275 but it would be nice to get $500 extra out of it.

The story behind the bike is I had it about 2 years ago and I rebuilt the topend and sold it to a guy and he ran weedeater gas in it and blew it up again. I eventually bought the bike back for $225. When I got it back I rebuilt the topend, put new chain and sprockets on it, put new front and rear tires and tubes, put new fork seals in it, new brake and clutch lever, new clutch cable, Pro Circuit exhaust on it and a few other things on it. I have about $950 in it right now. Well I was working on another bike putting it together so I let my buddy put the topend back together on it and he lost a piston circlip. He said it didn't go in the motor so we got another circlip and he put it together and I took it riding. Well about 30 minutes of run time it just dies like the topend blew again. I pulled it apart and it ruined the head, the cylinder needs to be bored (this cylinder is sleeved not plated) , and it also ruined the crank cause the circlip was still in the motor. Well I guess I learned a lesson there I should have done it myself but he made a mistake so im not mad at him. So if I could part it and get at least $800 out of it I would only be taking a $150 loss.

I parted out my 250x a long time ago and sold most of it and most likely made more parting it out than selling it BUT it is a PITA and very time consuming. I still have the bottom end in my garage and a few little things :p

don't forget the pay pal fees, a day packaging and pictures, then after they are packaged they need measured and weighed so you can get more accurate shipping cost. to bad your money making part, your motor is basically ruined. you need to talk it up to someone really wanting it and try for more money instead of someone trying to take advantage of the situation or hold out for another motor if you don't need the money.

Yea but the tranny and cases are still good the cases alone are on ebay for around $100 for each side

I just parted my ltr out and the majority of parts i made was with my aftermarket parts. I still have a ton of stock parts for sale its been a while used stock parts dont sell fast.

No im not dead set on parting out actually leaning more towards just selling it outright after what I have heard here. I was just trying to get some opinions.

If I posted a picture of my garage... you would say forget parting things out lol Either you get crazy lowballers, flakers, or only certain things will sell. Theres certain parts where its like 1 in a million need and they usually dont find you lol If you can for sure make your $275 with selling a few parts parting out then do it. Even if you have a $5 sale you will make more than your offer as a whole. If your not sure then dont do it.

I will generally not mess with parting out bikes completely, I will part out the aftermarket parts to try and recoup some of the money and put the atv back to stock. Its a pain to try and sell all of the little odds and ends.
