well since ive went to kick start only setup i have alot of trouble starting the bike when its hott. It will start relatively easy when cold but i do have to barley push in the throttle about 1/8-1/4 for it to fire up. it wont start by just kicking it and no gas. ive tried messing with the jetting pilot jets and cant ever get it right or could it be my valves? it has been awhile since ive had a valve adjustment but never had any issues with ticking or makin any noise.

someone has to have a starting point

Could be your valve lash. YFZ's have quite a bit of noise from the valve train as is so you won't hear much difference unless they get really bad. Normally, valves out of spec makes it hard to start while hot.

it seems to make some noise when it gets hott. i noticed it when i replaced my topend and didnt have my shim kit at the time to do them. but i will look into it now that i bought a kit. is it + or - 2 on the clearence? some ppl say + or - 4

As your valves wear it actually causes the valves to get tighter. It's kinda weird but I'll explain. As the face of the valve in the combustion chamber loses material it seats lower. This raises the valves stem higher against the cam lobes, caps, etc... Thus, there's less clearance and less noise as the lobes rotate across the cam caps. Hope that didn't confuse you too much lol.

The intake clearance is .10 - .15 mm(.004 - .006 in)
The exhaust clearance is .20 - ..25 mm(.008 - .10 in)

I always set em at 6 and 10, like R1R mentioned, they tighten up with time.

i checked my valves a week or 2 ago and the intake was really tight. i remember 1 or 2 valves you couldnt fit the feelers in i will have to re check them and let you know what i come out with

Do you have a hot start? Before I got mine if it was hot I'd kick for days. Now, first kick, hot or cold.

I know I'm glad I put one in mine. It would honestly take 5 minutes of kicking to get it to fire without it. Its cheap and easy to do so it couldn't hurt.

you are wasting your time kicking a hot quad without a hot start carb.... you might as well bump start it... You can adjust the jetting all you want.... but until you buy a hot start carb.... your wasting your time.... been there with the same problem, 07,08 race bike..... i didnt want to spend the money on a carb just for a hot start... every time i stalled it... it wouldnt start...

A stock YFZ carb is pre-bult for a hot start. All you need is the lever and cable.
