View Full Version : What is the best Quad for a big guy?

I seem I cannot get comfortable on a quad... So far I have had a yfz and a 250r and they both seem to have me cramped and I want to stand 90 percent of the time when I am riding but I just cannot find a way to get comfy...
It feels like the stem needs to be moved a head 2 inches and up two inches and the pegs need to come down and inch and back an inch.
I feel like these quads are built for midgets!
What do you bigger guys do for more comfort?
I am only 6 foot 1 but I weigh 245!
I want to stand more to absorb more shock with my legs... I race XC and 2 hours is a lot of pounding on your butt hole!

ktm450xc would be comfortable. i'm just a hair under 6'2" and its very comfortable. but i'd buy a 525 if i were you. same bike, just bigger engine. will pull your weight better. i know they are pricey but oh so worth it

I cant say from experience, but I know alot of the bigger guys recomend the ds650. Past that modding the 450 is probably your best bet....shocks, nerfs, stem, bars. That sort of thing.

I would go with the raptor 700.

Its hard to compare the handling to a laeger narrow 250r but can some one tell me how the 700s handle? I know the old raptors sucked.
Any insight is appreciated!
I also like the KTMs they look like nice bikes and teh 525 should be a power house please tell me more!
God Bless,
Dustin

My friend is 6ft 4in and almost 275lbs and he finds the 400 ex perfectly comfy and he is pretty big.

Perhaps a longer steering stem, higher bars and perhaps modding the pegs would help ya?

Save your money and start with taller bars. If they seem like they'd fall back or foreward on a hard landing get a taller stem. You'd probably need more than 2" up and foreward. You might as well keep the YFZ if you want the best handling. The 700 is taller, narrower, and has a higher center of gravity so it's going to be tippier. I didn't find the 660 tippy doing bar-locked 5th gear powerslides in a muddy field. At speed (aka slow for a non-racer) around pavement corners it didn't scare me but it also didn't inspire the confidence I thought it would. The modded 660 I rode was a slow & fun trail quad. 700s are apparently a new animal but with the same geometry I don't see it.

Im 6'3" 330, i have a 250R and 450R. Have rode the yfz and a ltr. From my experience the problem is the foot peg to seat height. My 250R I feel a little cramped, but with my 450R I dont. If you havnt rode a 450R I would try one. Mine is an 04.

the best way to describe the ergonomics is that it feels almost like a dirtbike. much more room. the handlebar-footpeg-seat relationship is very well placed. i was extremely comfortable as soon as i sat on the bike. the foot pegs and seat are pretty far apart so your legs arent cramped up, and the seat is very soft with a gripper cover. and wide in the back.

haha power house is an understatement, first day i had the 450 i beat a yfz that had cams, pipe and high comp piston. straight line, 300ft, and beat him bike 1 1/2 bike lengths twice. week later i outran a kx250. i cant imagine what the power on the 525 is like.

if you are racing xc this machine is the perfect choice. it comes with a steering stabilizer mount so its no hassle to bolt on on. the bar position is adjustable, the clutch it hydrolic, the ohlins shocks are fully adjustble(and are better than full race LT elkas i've rode), the a arms are extremely thick and strong and are camber/caster adjustable, the rear axle is adjustable from 45.5 to 47.5 inches, the front calipers are 4 pistons(two on either side of the rotor) with steel braded lines and wave rotors, it comes with maxxis razr's all the way around, and it had reverse. these are only the big selling points of this machine. if you dug into it, you'd see how well its built. its by far the best stock machine on the market, and better than alot of race bikes. the only thing you really need is nerfs and skids if you are gonna race xc. otherwise the bike is ready. it even has a tether kill switch from the factory.

here is my 450

If you want a comfy bike with tons of torque and great suspension get a DS650 hands down. It's by far the most comfy and reliable quad out there. But the one draw back is that it's not as light as 450's and Raptors. You're a big guy though so the weight won't effect you as much. I loved my DS. I would get an 05' or newer and you won't be disappointed.
I wouldn't hesitate to get a KTM525 either. They are comfy and light and have lot's of power for XC racing.
In all reality though the best way to see what's comfy for you is sit on a bunch of them and see what fits you best. Good luck.

I would go to a dealership and sit on a few to get a feel.

Outran a KX250 in a straight line? Terrain? Top speed and/or acceleration? Either way, what a powerhouse :eek2: .

straight line. 300ft drag. so it was acceleration. beat him by 1.5 bike lengths first run, and beat him by about 4ft the next two runs. either way i beat him. it was impressive. then i ran against by buddy a couple weeks later who also has a kx250, but he is piped and has reeds and we were right next to each other. it depended on the start whether or not who won

Give me that guys kx250 and Ill give you a head start and beat you by a mile please with the kx250 BS! we know the ktm is fast but not that fast! HA HA. Get the Raptor700!

Yeah a KX250 would take ANY 450. He most likely had no traction... Bikes only have one rear tire lol.

We all know the KTM's are one of the fastest 450's built.. but bikes are on a different level.

I also doubt the kid on the YFZ was a good rider. With a high compression piston and cams, he should have walked you. The YFZ's are pretty damn fast, too.

there arent a lot of sport quads that WOULDN'T be comfortable with a new stem and stuff like that to compensate...but as far as stock quads....DS650, Outlaw 525, Raptor 700R.

out of those i would go for an outlaw. but thats just me, the best way to tell if to go to a dealership and sit on a couple and see what you like.

Yeah, the outlaw has the KTM 525 powerplant, IRS, fox suspension, and razr tires, while being the same weight as the SRA raptor. Plus they have a real large sitting area.

I'm 6'1 and 260lbs and thought the Outlaw felt pretty damn comfortable from the factory.

Sure, they still have some issues. (cheap plastics and such) but they're pretty good quads overall.

I'm not flaming you. I LOVE the KTM's... I think they're amazing bikes. But facts are facts and it's just reality.

The 525 might POSSIBLY be even with a 250 dirt bike. I know my banshee was dead even with a 2008 CRF250R, which isn't that much faster then a 125, and I know for a FACT a stock 450 quad, no matter what brand, is not faster then mine, and even if it was, not by that much.

But back to the original topic, KTM, or Outlaw would be a perfect quad for the OP. Even a DS650.

I recommend the DS650, in like '03 or '04 they fixed some handling issues. They give you confidence cause there super stable, and last time I was at the dirt drags, this guy had a nice worked on motor. He would rev it to the limiter and just blow out of the hole about 1 quad length ahead of all the 450's and keep pulling on them. There a great quad, I'd have one too if I had the money.

Yeah KTM on a different level for 11,000 and still not putting out on dyno/racetrack agains,t the rest.if they where the fastest you,d see them on the podium in MX have,nt seen one podium this or last yr. Bottom line there no better than the rest!

i had a friend ride it and he's got a 450r with a fully built sparks engine and he says that with a pipe he thinks my machine would run with his. say what you will but the ktm is ballsy

I never liked the feel of the ktm, and I'm not sure why.
I'm only 5' 10, but at the time I was 230. It felt like a 250 to me. The raptor felt very unstable and top heavy, and yes, it was a 700. The most comfortable in my opinion is the ds650, the outlaw 525, and (oh no they'll eat me alive for this one) the 700xx.
The ds is heavy, but extremely stable, and actually built for big guys. It can eat whoops without even standing up, and the motor can take any mod you throw at it. They do feel a little big for me, but my dads 6'1 260 and he feels perfectly at home on it, coming off of a Banshee.
I've never ridden the outlaw, but sitting on it felt very good. The 700xx has a similar feel of the ds as far as leg placement and ergos and the IRS is a plus (if you know how to use it)

If I was a big guy I would be looking at the raptor700 #1 #2would be ds650#3renegade.All depends on what terrrain you ride to make decision! if you like mud bogging=renagade trails(eastcoast)Raptor, desert=DS650 IMO.
