reeds?

hi im new to the atv world and im hoping i can get some free knowledge. my boss just gave me a 88 250r in a box more or less and i was reading something about reeds. i just want to know what they are or what there porpose are ??

Reeds are fiber petals mounted in a reed cage inside the intake of the engine. They meter the fuel/air mixture from your carb into the engine intake. They constantly open and close MANY times a second, imagine a butterfly wing... They do wear over time and need replaced. After mounted, when you life one up it snaps back into place. Over time they lose the ability to completely snap back, and left go long enough can break off and you suck a piece of reed into the cylinder.
