A random guy rides up to you and asks: ""Hey, I'm in the market for a 400EX and I really like yours! Would you trade me for my raptor 700r? TRX450R/ER?""

Now, the quad the guy has is really nice, bone stock, runs great and looks great. (it's not stolen, either)

The model years are '05-'07 TRX450R/ER and '06-'07 Raptors.

What would you do and why??

And if not for these models, what other quad would you trade your 400 for? (be reasonable, please:D )

I tell him mine's not for trade, or sale.
I chose the 400ex because it's nearly bullet proof, highly modifiable, and is unmatched for reliability.
But then again, He probably already knows that, which would explain why he wants to trade.

But I'd offer the guy a cold brew, and ask him where the good trails are...

Now that's an answer!:D

id trade it for the 450, im a power monster, the raptors suck. if i was gonna get any big bore sport quad i would go with the cam am ds650, stock for stock the can am is much nicer and more powerful. but hey i work for can am:D

notice im in the ex section talking about can ams, and i ride a suzuki ltr now. :huh

he knows that a well built 400ex in the right element will destroy both the 450r and the raptor. but watch out for the straightaways

Firstly I think the NOT STOLEN part of the conversation would stop me. I'd want so much proof it's not stolen he'd get sick of me. You have a lot to lose playing the swap game.

I think more importantly, it depends on what kind of riding YOU DO.

Personally, I have had the oportunity to upgrade to a Raptor 700 but I think I would kill myself, where as I can ride the 400EX real hard and not get get into as much trouble.

I like going flat out, but sometimes I get my ambitions and my abilities mixed up!

I think theres a reason why theres so many people wanting to trade banshees, raptors, and 450's for 400ex's.

ex's are pretty much the best all around atv, universal and reliable.

If someone walked up to me and offered to trade my EX for a Raptor 700R or Honda 450R and had the title in hand for both, I would be an idiot to not take to 700R.

The 700 Raptor is the most impressive and versatile sport quad ever made. Well, maybe that title belongs to the Renegade 800 but I'm talking 2wd sport quads.

There is not one single area that I can think of where a 700 Raptor will not perform as good or most likely better than a 400ex and even most 450s. People that say otherwise have most likely never rode a 700 Raptor or are just too naive to accept that the 400ex is no longer the quad to own.

As far as reliability, I would say they are just as reliable if you leave out the electronics. Even then, most issues are caused by add ons like a PC3 or something else.

For a stock all purpose, manual clutch, 2wd sport quad, the 700 Raptor is at the top of the hill.

I would take the Raptor but, I am pretty happy having both my 416EX and KFX450.

I think the reason people are looking for Ex's is that they either have no experience on a quad and get a 450 or Raptor and realize they are way over their head in the power department or financial reasons.

I agree, the Ex's are great proven bikes, but I would never trade my raptor for any 400/450.

the 400ex is a dinosaur compared to the rest of what is available....but +1 raptors are the king of the hill!

It was not my intentions of getting something started, I was just stating my opinion. But, dirtman91386 does have a point. What other sport quad 400cc or larger is still clinging to past-dated technology as much as the 400ex?

Then again, the same could be said of the engine in the Corvette still being a pushrod v8 and not sohc or dohc.

Either way, if it wasn't for the 400ex, it is unlikely any of us would have our 450s or other big bore sport quads.

I definitely don't want this to turn into just another 400EX bashing thread. There's enough of those all over the internet.:)

dirtman saying the 400EX is a dinosaur is just stating the obvious, but that's part of the draw for me. I know it's old tech, but it works and works well.

So far this thread is excellent, some really good answers.

I have the opportunity to own any of these three quads, so I wanted to see if the 400EX guys would think that the Raptor or a 450 would be an "upgrade". Right now I have an imaginary 400EX and I'm just seeing if I should trade it.:D ;)

Oh, and the quad is definitely NOT stolen.

Good analogy with the Vette, ish416.

It depends on what you find important in a bike. The ex handles like a 250r, but not quite. The ex will last forever, and is the best choice for trails.
The 450 is fast, and is best suited for the track.
The raptor is "king" only at the dunes. And the raptors are really only reliable if they are stock, but hey, so's everything else.

They have been making the ex for what ten years now?
That seas it all right there!!!
You don’t fix something that’s not broken.
Just smile and say no thank you.

ill have to disgree with that. the raptor 700 by far takes the best to its mods..you can do so much to engine and still have it be relliable. the same with the 450's. you can mod the crap out of themm. time after time you walk out to the shed hit the start button and ride...ill put money on a 734 raptor or 470 450 lasting longer than any 440ex...stock for stock its anyones guess how long either quad will last..

i work at a atv repair shop and the most common sport quad to come in is a raptor mainly for tranny messing up (blowen 2nd gear on any year) or (not shifting at the right rpm and ripping the piston or rod off or both so if u want to spend alot of money on repairs get a raptor or if you want to spend alot of money on mods get a 400ex

I might consider the 450. as for the raptor, am I the only one who thinks those are seriously top heavy, kind of tippsy. I felt really unstable on it.

those 660's or 700's? they would have to be some pretty nasty built up 700's to break 2nd gear..have to be more than 100hp to break a rod...in either case i think it would require a lock out clutch....look man im not gaunna argue with you cause about 1% of people on this site even own a 700...im simply saying if you could trade a 400ex for a 700 or a 450 i would do it in a hart beat...what would you want to drive a caviler, an srt4 neon...or a keene bell cobra?....dont even answer that....

This is because there are more raptors sold than most if not any other sport quad

This is a load of crap, the raptor is just as reliable as any honda now days...even when modded.
