Ok so here is the story. I got a 265 with 39 mm pwk carb.
fmf SST pipe. I was hill dragging some z400s, a ds 650 and other junk. Anyways this guy shows up with 450 yamaha with a cam mod and Im a bike length behind all of the time on the hill drag. I want to be the fastest in these parts or at least faster than the z450. What do i need to make this happen. Porting or what. I beat everyone else but Im just behind hrc 450 and z450. Need some advice from those who have solved this little problem

try a bigger motor!!!! 310 or 330 get a mx port job and all the regular **** that comes w building a motor maybe different sprockets too for some low end torque?????

Whats your guys opinion on a well built 350r? Would a YFZ with all the basic mods be a competitor?

Here is a video of me racing my brother on his YFZ 450.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5I7TKw9p_e4&feature=related

This was last year before I had made a few of the changes that I've got now. I had an ESR 310 w/pump gas dome-170 psi (NO extra porting) just whatever it came with
36mm PWK carb/stock airbox, RAD valve
13/38 gearing/ESR TRX-9 pipe
Stock crank/stock ignition

You can see I had a hard time keeping the front wheels down, so I had to feather the throttle. My brothers YFZ 450 has been ported (by one of the best local guys around), Curtis Sparks stage 3 cam, Curtis Sparks full exhaust, bigger piston, 15:1 compression, Curtis Sparks filter, timing retared, quick shot on the carb, and a few other mods.

He only got about maybe at the most 2 1/2 bikes in front. If I could have kept the front end down, maybe I could have closed that by another bike lenth.

I have since added a 2001 CR 250 ignition, 38m Airstryker carb, ESR eliminator, 14/39 gearing, race gas dome, V-force 3 reeds and a +4 swing-arm. So I know my 250R is a lot stronger now. Remember, there's no replacment for displacement.

well I want to stay with the factory jug. So I can keep it cheaper.
Intake is stock with carbon fiber reeds I think. Compresssion is pump gas so stock I guess

Some real good porting will help you out alot!!

In sand drags quads are alot closer IMO you race him on grass/hard ground he really would put it too you ! My Z stays with in 2 -3 quads on a piped yfz450 in the dune (buttercup) but on grass he would pull alot more lenths .Those Z450,s pump out 55+hp /lots of torque! have fun trying to beat those Z450,s Without a big jug!

midrange-top end porting is what you need!!

as said above, for draggin with a oem jug you def. will need some mid-top porting, and a nice exhaust to compliment it. that sst pipe is a low end pipe. the 39pwk carb is good for your application, just make sure its dialed in good. the sure way to smoke them though, would be to get a 310, 330, 0r 350 jug.

I have alot of experience with flattrack 250rs get a different pipe to start with! Fmf is ok but far from a FTZ whale. FTZ has a good price on porting as well. I ran their 265 stroker with the whale pipe and wow it was a great top end motor. My other esr 350 was no faster cause we all know esr ported cylinders are not that good at all. My 265 ftz motor will keep up or beat most 450s no kidding. Im not getting into a pi##ing match with the 450 guys its just a fact these FTZ RS ARE FAST! Also they have a new design on their pipes you need one and let them port your cylinder and by by yfz 450.:D

there can be replacement for displacement.. in some cases. my last 88 had stock cylinder that was full blown drag ported for all top and i had a PT hi-rev pipe with a ftz ported rad valve, 39mm pwk, n k&n filter. and i would smoke my friends 86 so he got the esr 330 (non bolt on) with their mid porting, he had a 39 as well with a ct pipe.. and i would still beat his 330 with a stock 250cc he was so pissed, and yes he could ride just as good. it had $hit loads of more torque and power but he still couldnt out run my 250cc on the flat.. i always enjoyed it.
if you get a good top pipe and port, with a 39 carb, and a new intake set up along with a k&n filter you will pick up way more than the 1 bike length you need for sure....

my brothers esr 330 pulls my banshee on top end by a bike or so but thats a 2nd or 3rd gear pull. He never wants to go from a dig to see whos faster which I know in a 300ft race id beat him but we never seen who actually is quicker
