starter or starter clutch?

how can u tell if the starter is bad or if it is the starter clutch that went bad?

You hit the start button and the starter spins= starter clutch

im an idiot. that makes alot of sense. but i took starter and had it rebuilt only to find out it was the starter solenoid located by the battery. anyone know where i can get one?
