I am trying to get my 400ex ready for the long weekend.
It has kind of sat around for a a couple years and hasn't been ridden much.

It ran fine when it was put away, but now it won't run worth a damn.

Starts fine, but it won't idle. Needs to be rev'd for it to stay running. Pops, backfires and stuff too and sort of half dies even while holding the throttle on.

I have already drained the tank and put new premium grade fuel in it, pulled the plug to put a new one in and the old one was BLACK, and pretty full of carbon. This would be a rich mixture wouldnt it? But the popping and backfiring would be lean? :ermm:

The quad is pretty much stock;
UNI foam filter
and it has a 40 pilot jet, and I am pretty sure i changed the main jet to a 150 (both keihen jets)

Idle screw is also all the way in, I have been playing with the fuel screw too and it hasn't helped at all.

Any tips?

If it has been sitting a while with gas in the carb, you may need to give it a good cleaning.

I already had the carb out and apart. Didn't have a can of carb cleaner at the shop though (which is 2 hours away from me) I brought it home to my garage now, so I will have to take it out and give it a little bit better of a cleaning I suppose.
