Well i've been pondering doing this for awhile now. I'm going to start picking up where quadtech left off.I'm tired of companies abandoning my beloved 250R and all the trick parts for them! So im going to start producing these carbon parts again!

Hoods: Stock and Scooped
Tank Covers:Stock and 3.6 Gal

I'm certified in carbon fiber so its not like im a newbie, so no worry of crap parts! I'm hoping to turn this into something so all the help would b appretiated!

Let me know if you guys are interested so i can get this project underway

What about a naca duct hood too?

ml250r
05-16-2010, 07:49 AM
I would do one ,but i would need one to make a mold from. If someone would part w one for a few weeks i would make them a smokin deal for another part!

My naca duct isn't in any shape to be coppied. It was broke when I got it. What about doing a carbon 89 style hood with the head light?

ml250r
05-16-2010, 09:17 AM
Yea i was thinking of doing an 88-89 style hood too. how bad is your naca hood? is it savable? i would repair it for free if you would let me take a mold of it. Send me some pics and let me see how beat up it is.

This is a pic of my QT hood i got off ebay for $10. it was painted , about 3 in. of the nose was broke off and missing 2 mounts and CRACKED EVERYWHERE!i repaired it and just sprayed the nose black bc i didnt wanna waste a full peice of Carbon cloth just for a hood for myself

I'm all for it! I'd like to see some of the different hoods and things mentioned already, Nuca, OEM 89.

FYI, Jay at Fourwerx is still making high quality stuff. He'll get you anything you want (within reason), in carbon fiber for the 250r.

i thought they were too, but i was just on their website last night and not even a mention of R parts on there anymore. Maybe i was 'nt looking hard enough ,but it looks like they changed their site.

Believe me, Dan and I just got custom red ones from Jay a couple months ago. He's still making the stuff. When he orders a run, (i'm not sure how many that is), he then adds them to the website. I heard he was getting ready to make a big order for the 250r, tank covers, shrouds, hoods, MC guards... don't know if there is any truth to that.

His email is jay@fwcarbon.com, he's a good dude and is more than happy to accommodate the 250r gurus. Email him and see what he says.

Don't let me discourage you from making stuff too. More the merrier...

ml250r
05-16-2010, 09:33 AM
Oh no, no discouragement here! lol I'm planning on making a full time buisness of this. Not just r parts or atv parts for that matter. I build and paint custom cars and bikes for a living so these parts are just going to b part of the whole plan.

A rear master cylinder guard also. I think to spark more interest you need to think outside the box, yeah naca ducts and the scooped hoods look great but something new would be great. I sent you a pic of my hood

a few years back mp racing (now defunct) in portland, or was doing carbon fiber axles. i cant remember if they were makin them themselves or getting them from a local co. maybe JJ&A ? they were hella trick

You should make some ds650 hoods, so they won't be so ugly all the time

the axles had a hollow aluminum tube core and if i remember right used a key and keyway on the hubs. i don't think there was any splines for brake hub, sprocket or wheel hubs. very light. pdx bigfoot might know something about these. i think steve, the guy who had mp at the time had one on his polonda

ml250r
05-16-2010, 09:09 PM
Well 88-89 style hoods r def and the table to b done! I'll have to brainstorm about an idea for a new style of scoop or some kind of integration of lights or something into a hood

I just bought a CF hood from Jay at FW's. He told me he's gonna let me know when the next run of tank covers is starting. I believe he's on vacation so he's not there right now but if you call him next week i think he has some hoods in stock.

danhung11
05-17-2010, 06:10 PM
Do you plan to make colored CF parts? not only the traditional CF parts? Such as a white, red, blue, etc scooped hoods? Also, do you plan to focus on OEM style plastics, Full Bore, or both?

Thanks in advance for taking this on!

Dan

troybilt
05-17-2010, 06:35 PM
same questions as Dan. I vote mounts to OEM style 2 pc front plastics!

Could do a hood similar to the quadtech 450r hood, with the dual grills for the 250r.

ml250r
05-17-2010, 08:03 PM
i am def gonna do some for fullbores since there r so many sets of them out there. I will be doing color hood in all designs (in carbon and fiberglass) and will also offer custom colors . I do custom paint for a living and y not offer some for the quad guys too! I will be doing hoods for all 450s (gonna do a lil sketching on a dual scoop hood too)

Back in the US... we've got (2) Red 250R hoods and (3) Carbon 250R hoods on the shelf right now.

I've got the molds made for a flat style 250R hood too, but am waiting to make a production run on them. Don't want to stock a ton of hoods until I move the scooped ones.

Could make a mold out of foam, and shave it to desired shape... probably be hard to get someone to loan a very rare Hondaline item like this to make a mold from... maybe wrong here. I've only see one on here in 3 years.

Fit Fullbores anyway i would imagine so maybe doing something that resembles the Hondaline hood is the way to go.

I have had a few offers for the aero cover but most had holes and cracks and they all still wanted top dollar for them.even if they were a more modern design it may give it a different twist and be more appealing, besides that the honda part really doesn't fit quiet that well in my opinion it does not follow the hoods line very well. I am like pdxbigfoot i call seconds for 1 or 2 myself a red one and a black one hint! hint! :D

I'm thinking 'Custom Carbon and Composites' for the name. Well im trying to get a a 88 hood to copy right now. I def know what you mean about getting ahold of a Hondaline hood! When i get ahold of an 88 hood , it wont take that long do get a Hondaline 'look alike' hood made up.

Why not just forego all of that and make a "cowl" hood that mounts on fullbores just like every other QT style hood. Could change the height of the cowl so it doesn't stick out like a boner in sweatpants. That would be a cool hood, sort of 70 chevelle-esque...

Joining this discussion late I guess.

I have a couple questions ML250R.

What is the process like for developing a NEW part out of carbon fibre?

It sounds like a mold has to be made etc, but what is the mold made out of?

The reason I ask, is I have a couple parts I would LOVE to have made as one offs and if it's not going to be absolutely outrageous, don't mind paying for the development of the part.

With that said, you mentioned you do fibreglass.
As far as making hoods that house headlights, which product would be sturdier and take more abuse? Carbon fibre or fibreglass? Which is easier to form?

I will send you a PM for the parts I would like. There is no big hurry as I'm sure you'll be busy getting the 250R stuff going, but when you get a chance, let me know some price ranges or if you think it can be done.

thanks.

Im with ya!!!
I think we need something "new".
I have been doing hours of research into making molds and i hope to start sculpting something soon.
Thing is it will be for the Fullbores as i dont have stockers and there are soooo many different ways to go.
We will just have to wait and see i guess.

If you're good at CAD and nurb surfacing you can send your model to several mold makers and they can basically print them out for you in 3D, pretty cool stuff. Some use a 6-axis CNC foam machining center to make them. Wonder if model maker's clay would work?

I'm interested too, curious what you come up with on making molds that cools stuff. If you need any 3D CAD work I can help.

Well guys...no fancy stuff in my shop! I wish i had a 6 axis machine! just a block of foam, shaping tools and a lil modeling clay for the "new" design parts. Should b able to get some new design drawings up this weekend. Its been a little hecktic in the shop this week trying to get molds and parts fabricated.

I am however looking for someone w cnc machine access to produce some grills? Any takers? I have access to a water jet, but theres too much finishing of the parts after they come out for me. If i have to i'll use it,but im trying to make this easy on myself as much as possible! lol

250renvy- Carbon parts are def stronger compared to the same thickness as Fiberglass ,Kevlar is stronger yet,but twice as expensive for the material and not as pleasing to the eye, so not much of a demand for it.

Should fit. I just went out in the garage and pulled the block off off one of my 450R's and installed it on my 250R. I then took the one that was on my 250R and installed it on my 450R. Both bolted up just fine with no problems.

While on the topic of what parts you would like to see made, I would love a set of carbon fiber radiator shrouds.

I'm back state-side now, from the UK and you can me in for a block plate, I need one for my 450 too.

So my List:

(1) Block off plate - 450r
(1) Kick start lever plastic protector cover thing-a-ma-gig for 250r

and if you get around to it something to cover the plastic area that my aftermarket exhaust burned a hole thru (or make the kick start area and the burn hole area all one piece, just an idea...)

I'd also be ecstatic for a 450r carbon fiber tank cover!! hint hint... I hate graphics on the tank...

I've also got 89 OEM plastic that is not in great shape finish-wize that I can donate for the cause as well.

I also might be down for a nuca duct hood, to save for future build...

If you do get an itch to do some 450r stuff, I'm getting ready to do a complete tear down of mine, so I'll have any parts you'd need to make molds from.

if its not too much trouble do you think that you could put together a parts list of the items that you can now make, any one that you would still like to make and what we could help you get, and a price list so if we would like to place an order with you we can. Thanks.

For example - I have a set of aluminum a-arm gaurds (for stock a-arms) just sitting on the shelf, maybe someone would like a set of those in CF, bet it would look BA. Just a thought

It makes people loose trust in each other! And this sucks because I'm sure alot of people would have love to have another source to get Carbon fiber parts from! Thanks Higgy!
