View Full Version : 250R powerplant in 450R frame?

I've seen that people have done this in a 400EX frame, but was wondering if it has been done in the 450R frame.

I was considering using a 450 swing arm with my 86 250R, but I've seen a lot of people are having problems with getting the linkage right. However...

when I was looking at the project for the swingarm, one of the benefits was that the rear engine mount from the 86 worked with the 04/05 swingarm. This would ensure the sprocket easily being placed in the proper positioning for suspension travel on a 450R frame, and give a good starting point.

The other reason is I am at a cross roads of updating my stock shocks, and upgrading from standard +3 a-arms to Long Travel A-arms. If I invest in the suspension I feel I may be stuck with an outdated products, and hard to get parts... brakes etc... while the 450R controls seem to be top notch equipment.

I do plan on doing the 450R spindle/Hub/Brake upgrade, and maybe even attempting the swing arm upgrade, but with how cheap 450 Frames are going for I think I may look into that instead. Besides, I could always use the 450 Parts I put on my 250 as part of the later 450 frame up build.

Anyhow, what do you guys think about this? Anyone have pics of a project similar to this?

What did u do to set up the chain angle on your 400 when u did the swap?

no prob. just thought it was funny... all i did was switch the spacers in the swing arm from left to right, and right to left. then grinded down the sprocket side(left, but was right) spacer to fit the rear 250r mount, and it fit perfectly...lined up and all.. I ended up putting a larger sproket on the front to keep it off the slider, but that was it...

here you can see how it used to sag on the slider..

No problem, I like the info! What engine mounts did you use for the front of the engine? Are there factory mounts that will work, or do you have to go custom?

Nice! i wish it was that easy with the 450r frame....nothing lines up...but its not too hard to just bend up some new mounts and weld em down.

You didnt go through alot of chain guards on the swingarm? Thats my only concern, chain rub...

I used ones that were already made for the swap.. what he did was use 2 right sided one, and bent the 1 of them straight for the shifter side.. then he had to cut little notches to clear the motor, and line up the hole..fit good..

yea, i know right. i couldn't beleave it was so easy, but it was... yea, it's easy to bend up your own mounts, i had two that i ran from the stock mounts to the motor for the bottom 2....watchya mean by chain gaurd.. if you meant the chain slider, that sprocket was temp. and i replaced it with a bigger one i had. theres no chain gaurd/slider on the back part of a 400ex swing arm, it's built into the skid plate..

here's a pic when it was more "complete", and after i put on the larger rear sprocket.. after changing the sprocket, i didn't wear it out any faster than stock 400 does...

the carb was a tight fit.. just wiggle it around and it fit good..

... this was the hardest part i did, welded an ear off another frame i had and used a peice from a 400ex linkage and used it for a headstay mount.

.. i have never owned a 450r, so i don't know how much different they are from a 400ex... but i guess any info's better than none..
