I pretty much label any RWD, manual trans, V8, 2-door car as a sports car. I mean, people buy them to be a sporty d/d or weekend car. Compared to 4/6 cylinder FWD 4-door cars.

We are getting that. Maybe 8 if we're slightly harder on the throttle.

What gears does your truck have? Ours has the 4:56 ratio, which really helps around town because it takes off under less strain. Just kills on the highway, lol. There's a good chance yours has gears in the 3 range, or 4.10's. That might explain it.

You asked about 4.3 and 327 Engines. I'm assuming you are talking about the 5.3 liter engines in the 99-up Chevy's. 4.3 Autos don't get that great in a full size. I'd say the 4.8 l in the 99-current Chevy's get the best mileage out of the Chevy's but the 5.3 only gets a little less with a lot more power.

Back in the 90's we took a 91 454ss and installed Thorly tri Y headers, paxton supercharger and cam. Mileage went from 5 to 7 mpg to 10mpg normal and 11 towing ( due to keeping foot out of it)
I dont remember the exact dyno numbers but it was somewhere in the high 300 horse and almost 800 foot pounds of torque.
For a big sow of a truck it smoked most everything we raced up to 100mph. Just ungodly throttle response. It was very difficult not to chirp the tires normal driving .

The 5.7 was discontinued in 1999 in the last of the burbs and some of the 3500 trucks. in normal trucks like the 1500s it was moved to the 5.3 l in 1999 with the change of the body styling from 1998 and the old style back through 88 when it was the square body. the 5.7 question was directed toward redrider, it is not supposed to be a 5.7 in the truck that he was referring to which is a 2001. it is a 4.3, 4.8, 5.3, or the 6L in 2001. depending on the package it was and the size of the truck. the ss models had the 6L in them along in later years with some trucks from different years such as the 2500 hds. the HD trucks that were 1500s and such had the 6L in them in 2001 if ordered with it. It just depends on what package you get. I know the trailblazer, monte, impala, and some of the other ss models in 06 and such had the 6L or the 5.3 in them depending on the car. These vehicles are a blast to drive with a motor like that in them. they would def put you in the seat. i hope this clears up a few questions that some of the peeps had with the 5.7 and the 5.3s and such. the 5.7 and the 5.3 are supposed to be the same amount of hp but the 5.3 is geared differently so it runs higher rpms thus resulting in poor milage when directly compared to the 5.7s of yester year. I wish i could get some new 5.7s to put in the new vehicles and actually get 18 without trying to hard. lol steve

Speaking of 5.3 and 5.7 motors, I have found that to get the best mileage out of a 5.7, you need to keep the RPMs down and not kick it anymore than you have to on the hills. I will speed up on downhills so that I only lose a few mph on the uphill.

In the 5.3 we've always had the best luck with mpg turning the cruise on and letting it rev to the moon on hills. These motors seem to get better mileage letting them do their thing. Same with 6.0s. They handle the revs better.

honda400ex2003

Yea, this truck was insane. It wasnt pretty, it had been totaled and he built it back up with frontend parts from a work truck chevy of the same era. The thing was falling apart but could do 0-60 in no time. I literally chirped the tires just taking off from a light easily in it.

He had to sell it cause it was basically falling apart and ruined cause he used it as his work truck.

What I didnt understand is why they didnt use an overdrive tranny in the 454ss. At hyway speeds it was screamin with the old turbo 400. The paxton setup still used the dual injector throttle body and we always had trouble keeping the cheezy pressure manifold sealing up on it. Then when you did get good boost the belt slipped at high rpm.

Gears will also make a big difference, but lightweight vehicle or not, probably no more than 15 if you're being easy on it.

Then when you did get good boost the belt slipped at high rpm.

I never understood it either, I knew of a few guys who had a 4 speed built up to handle the power. I dont think it was ever meant to be a hwy truck either.

Course Im also a fan of the 2 speed powerglides, but they aint good for hwy period..

Had a '92 Ford F350, 460ci, got probably 5-7mpg. Seemed like the auto only had 3 speeds and in top gear it was always revving high. Supposedly only had 230hp when it was new. Didn't feel like it though.

Hauled a lot of limestone in that, way more than rated. Scales said I had 8600lbs net one time. Had to stand on the brakes to stop it.
