are you out of your mind.

1. there are people who went 10+ years on their engine without any mechanical issues. original top end and such.

2. about 40 pounds lighter and 10 more horsepower with 5-10 more horses easily uncorked.

3. much cheaper to maintain.

4. as for speed. stock for stock. they get banshees in a holeshot, and with a good rider they take them in the end also.

i had an original 99 400ex built to a 435cc hi-comp bike. port/polish, cam and etc. in 2003 i got a 250r and i rarely ever rode the 400ex. i just sold it last year because it just sat and took up space.

your 400ex is based off the 250r. without it we would never have a 400ex. and without the 250rs (honda, kawi, zuki,) we wouldnt have 450rs, we owe our sport to the 250rs. not to mention a single cylinder 250cc 2 stroke that can beat a 350 twin 2 stroke is a well built machine. made to be fast.

if you havent rode a 250r, get on your 400ex and then get on a 250r and tell me how big the difference is. My 250r outhandled my 400ex by a long shot and the power on it was down right nuts and i didnt have any port work and on stock bore. My brothers 330 big bore 250r is f'n retarded. Damn near keeps up with my banshee but handles like its on rails

i have a 400ex with a 250r motor in it. compared to my 86 250r, its pretty damn close. the 400ex sits a bit higher and i find it beneficial in the woods. the 400ex chassied 250r also feels a bit lighter. but all in all, you cant lose with a 250r.

mine was set up for mx but I do see where the 400 chassis would be better maybe for a woods application

haha. i put a ton of money in my 400ex and was reluctant to sell it. but it also basically sat for 7 years also. i still have to say i miss being to ride wheelies all day with the 400. but power wheelies on the 250r in 4th is fun too. but, a lil scary.lol

The 250r owe,s its Roots to the Suzuki quadracer250 that where it started! honda only improved the design.

I owned a 86 250r for about 3 years, traded it off earlier this year cause it was getting to the point where I was working on it more than riding it. the 250r and 400ex are in a way very similar and very different. they have close to the same frame design but handle and "feel" very different. to me the 250r felt like it was "low and long" and the 400ex feels "tall and short" (short meaning the wheelbase). I did a couple gncc races on it and it is deffinatly a fun bike to race. you stay busy working the clutch and shifting the gears to stay in the meat of the powerband. the 400ex to me feels 10 times easier to ride in the woods though, alot less clutch work and gear shifting and you can use the raw torque of the motor to pull right along. in a straight out drag race the 250r will win in most cases cause it has more topend power and the 6th gear helps too. infact, there is still one rider I know of that races GNCC in the afternoon/pro classes. seen him at every gncc race ive been to (3 so far).

my opinion of the 250r vs. 400ex is that the 250r takes a little more skill and work to ride fast on, especially in tight technical trails, and the power is very fun for playing around with, whereas the 400ex is just easier to ride with a much more smooth, wide powerband and more torquey feel. I feel like I can ride a little faster on my 400ex in the woods than my 250r, but the 250r is a little more fun to ride. I got lots of videos of my old R on youtube, heres a couple, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dz71y4rnkNQ
