but the way we did it was we cut slits in the ends, then took some small diameter round tubeing and inserted it into the subframe, then we put the the flat metal in the slits and that sat on the round tubing so it wouldnt sit too deep. after we tacked all that stuff in we put a cross bar on the end to give the frame more strenght amd support, like i said its different from the way most people do it but its strong enought to bounch up and down on with full weight so its strong and sturdy, all thats left to do is grind down the welds and paint

Did you use a stick welder or a wire feed welder? It kinda looks like a stick weld.
Not that one is better then the other but I’ve been thinking about getting a welding machine but I’m not sure witch way to go, stick or wire.

its a wire fed mig welder

those welds arent very good, my dad is still expirmenting with the heat, he got the welder for christmas

even though he is a ceritfied welder. thats what he went to college for, and now hes a fireman, lol

I have always used a stick, and the few times I used a wire welder it was already set up and ready to go. I’m sure the wire welder is better for thin stuff and will do well on heavy stuff. But the stick is probably easer to set up and use.

You might want to tack the nuts to the frame before you paint so you don’t need a back up wrench to take it off.
Those welds don’t look to bad, the important thing is that it holds, and it looks like it will.
Welding is one of those things that no mater how much training you have, if you don’t use it you loose it.

Nice job, If you dont mind me asking, why did you go on top? I am curious to see how people do these and decide how to do the setup. Did you consider going under why or why not? steve

well on top it gave it a nice look by going closer to the fenders, if you went on the bottom it would have a big gap from the plastics to the bar

and also by puttin the mount on the bottom i think it would have a higher chance of snapping off compared to the on top mount were the subframe supports it, see what im saying

tell me if i dont make sense

sounds good! I think that going underneath would have a bit better leverage if you got stuck. that would be my idea lol or in the middle. But i do like the top side also that is a great idea to take up the space on the top side. Do you have your tool container to put back on? steve

Have you straped it down to a trailer yet?
that is what im worried bout if i do that, is how well it will hold if i pull down on it?
and what kind of bike is that bar made for?

If its welded good enough it wont come off.

I would advise you add a few more nuts and bolts on each side (I would do 4 per side) and make sure you use grade 8 bolts and nuts. Welds look pretty good, but more important is the penetration to the metals themselves, which look good from the outside.

GOOD JOB! I LIKE IT!

just to get you straight on the welder SB47, not to be rude or anything, the 220 wire feed mig welders will only weld about a half inch, which is prety thick. we have a 110 Common sized Miller that will weld up to about a 1/4 inch thick steel. IMO the stick is the best one, the have a Really smooth weld and can weld as thick as a metal that you can throw in front of it. so if we had to do it agian we would have went with a 220 miller cause all we weld is smaller stuff. Grab bar looks sweet

Why not make a new tool tube like I did, looks cool & carries more
as well. Big Gun should make these as an accessory for the ex.
Hope the pic works.
