How is the power of an apex 90 compared to the trx250ex honda? I just test drove the 250 and was curious how the two quads compared in stock (or not) form!

my son has beaten several 250ex hondas on the MX, TT and 300' drag at the Florida ATV Motoplex as well as the Suzuki Z250 on his DRR with a little clutch and carb tuning and mild porting.
IMHO stay away from drum brakes and shaft drives...just my .02

The Honda 250ex is a great trail quad, can't beat it. My wife has one and it's great for her and maintance free, The Apex is pretty much for one thing and thats racing. Now ,if you want to know which one is faster in short runs the Apex will beat the 250. Good luck with your decision. Derek

Can't go wrong with the 250ex, However, if you want more power go with the Raptor 250, more power and buildable where as the Honda is limited. The Honda has reverse which is nice when trail riding. Raptor does not. Derek

Just my opinion....if it just for the dunes I would say go with the Honda.

We used our Apex 90 at the dunes and it did fine.
However it was ridden wide open all the time and i was worried we were going to blow it up.

We had an Artic Cat DVX 250 which I know is a big turd, but my kid liked riding it in the dunes way better than the Apex.

good luck.

since you said dune quad, I would look for a blaster. 2 stroke with paddles will rip in the dunes, but he would have to learn the clutch like the raptor. The honda is auto clutch.
I do agree that I would not get a cvt mini quad for dunes.

At your age 11 a pro-pitster 150 would be perfect they come with better chassie, shocks, fenders, looks awesome and is I think there less or the same money as a new yamaha, suzuki, honda and performs better, they say its almost as fast as a rapper 250,but handle better, and you can mods it !Also an apex 100? too! depends how big/weight you should go online and look at the pro-pitster 150,Apexs,yamaha,s .the honda, artic cat ,suzuki 250 are a waste !cant get nothing for then used and cant make then that fast /handle better. Good Handling quad is what you want!250,s other than the rapper SUCK! Just my two cents !

you can probably get a Raptor 250 for less than the Pitster pro but yes it would also be a good option.

I too would go with raptor 250 or honda 300. IMO Cvt's are a little finicky in sand(doesn't know what gear to be in). You could probably tune the clutch for sand but have to retune for dirt. Our belt disentrigrated in an hour because I didn't adjust the rollers. Someone who rides in the sand more than us will be able to tell you how and what in the clutch needs adjusted.

FISH ON!

yamaha has a $1000 rebate on left over '08 Raptor 250s. If you look around you will find some still out there. Just bought one for $2864 OTD !! Awfull hard to beat. May not handle as good as a Pister out of the box but far far better reliability when ridden hard.
