You WILL be under powered compared to the 450's, but you should do fine. I watched my step son start out racing on 400ex in the C class and he pulled very good starts on the 450's. Work on your corners. In C class your riding ability will out run the 450's power.

Even if you are not first all the time you should be able to stay in the hunt. Again race, have fun and learn. And save for the 450. If you can beat your competition on the 400 think of how bad you will smoke them when you get the 450.

Make sure that you are in good shape... Your endurance is a major part as well.

If i would you I would run the 400 the way it is. Spend money on it to keep it running and safe.
Do no more mods to it and save that money to invest in a 450.

This is my opinion and nothing else. But it seems logical.

practice and endurance the rest will fall into place...a lot of the local c classes dont really train or anything so catch them off endurance ( at least that how it was around here )

You need to get out of your head that you are not going to compete with the 450's.

Think about how your going to wreck all those 450's you have to race against.

Not sure about the series you are running, but NEATV has a Sport 15+ class. The 4 stroke limit is 400cc, so that would put you on an even level as far as power.

Especially in the lower classes, handling and rider ability plays a major part of winning the race.

heres some encouragement. a buddy of mine last year rode a 300ex modded out big bore and everything converted over to 400ex suspension LT front end etc. well he rode the local C&D class and was puttin a wax job on 90% of the 450's he came out 2nd and 3rd every race. I can say he knows how to ride even tho his bike was modded as the 450s were also piped camed etc. if u hit all the jumps and dont poke around ull be fine with a 400

every d-6 race there are qualfiers. and only the top 20 of about 26ish make the race but with anyluck you will make it in. go for it. look for a blue and orange yfz with the #12s and say hey. if your going to hurrican hiills there is a practice this sat from 10 to 4. i RECOMEND practing at the track b4 the race.
i hit every jump(sept one triple) and sometimes have a hard time getting in because of a poor holeshot. ITS ALL IN THE HOLESHOT

im also a C class racer. ENDURANCE IS KEY!!!!!! ill admit i aint in the best of shape i can usually holeshot and lead most of the race on my yfz but the last few laps i get tired and get slower and get passed haha a 400s power wont wear you out as fast even if the 450s are leadin you by a mile if u can run 90% 100% of the time youll win. but even if you dont win just have fun my first race i finished last in both motos but i had a blast and that motivated me to train harder. good luck!!

I raced 400's against 450's before. If it's a TRUE "C" class nobody should really be doing many big jumps unless they have raced for several years as youngsters. You will be just fine. Don't worry about how ya do at first. Get out, have fun, and ride! Practice all you can. Work on troubled areas more. Watch videos all you can. It's amazing how much you can learn. Find some helmet cams that show hands also. Slipping the clutch out of turns keeping the revs up gives you more speed on exits. Keep your elbows down on turns. DON'T TOUCH TEH REAR BRAKE ON STARTS! Hold the front brake and let it rap out as soon as the board turns. SLOWLY let off the clutch to barely move. When the gate drops, let loose of both clutch and brake. Sit on the tank (lean forward) till about 2nd or 3rd gear then get your butt back the the rear tires for max traction. Should be a good starter point for ya :D

NOW GO RIDE :D

As everyone has said just prac. and have fun for your first few races. Ive only raced 2 times so far and both of them were last year. Probably will only do two races this year and jsut ride alot.

My first two races kind of discouraged me from riding, but they also got me hooked! Me and my buddy both got in the sport at the same time an were complete noobs and didnt know mucha bout the local class system, so we ended up racing against people tons of crap done to their bikes...yeh we pretty much entered in the wrong class haha
