I just cut mine in two last night to extend it, I bored a tube to slideover the stem to make it 1 in longer, the tube is 6in long I had to bore the inside to make it fit. This should be plenty strong for trail riding. A news stock stem is only $50, if I wreck and bend this one i'll go and buy a aftermarket one but for now this will work. I have better things to spend $300 on:D like a 416 :devil

Also for any one who wants to do this the outside of the stem Measures 1.130 and inside the stem is 0.937 If you need and info PM me:devil

Deerman, i did that. I cut the stem with a pipe cutter to get a square cut. I machined a 1 5/8" piece of steel stock with a shoulder on each end to fit into the stem halves. Then I had it welded up. Worked awesome. I hit a tree with the left side of the bars and bent the stem. It didn't bend at the weld, it bent at the top. I have since put a Roll Design stem in the 400ex. I wanted to run a set of Pro Tapers to see if I liked them. Worked out good. Don't know how good it would hold up in a MX or XC race. Charlie.

you could always fab up a spacer to raise the clamps they are just bolted down.
