Yep, just replace the nut with a flat headed bolt.

why do you need the flat head bolt?

That nut you knock off is what the bolt the goes through the fender bracket goes through. You need to replace it with a flat headed bolt so you can still have clearance for the shock. I'll try to draw something to clarify.

Yes that is the one. Lets see if this diagram helps any. Frankly, I'm ashamed of it, but a laptop is all I have, and its a pita to get the camera out and take pics haha.

The image on the left is the stock setup. Note the large black nut that is intruding upon the upper shock mount.

The image on the right is how it needs to be. You'll see that the nut is removed, and that a flat headed bolt has been install upside down to hold the fender bracket and save space.

Does that help?

I did very little grinding on mine to get them on. Just take a very small amount off the top and your done.

I tried to get away with just grinding a bit of the nut away but on the first big ride both bolts came out and my front plastics were flappin about the place quite badly.

I ended up putting on flat head bolts plus I still had to grind a small amount off the shocks too.

I shoulda just done it the right way the first time.

Why it's just abou the Same as the 400. My 400 shocks where 10 years old. Best thing I could have done. By far. And I go all three shock and a 450 carb for 200

i would really not suggest grinding the shock down i would hit the mount it is only like a 1/2 X 1/8 little notch u need to make not a big deal

Bash the bolt off that holds the plastics on and replace with a carriage bolt and nut to hold plastics on.

Then take a small grinder like a dremel and relieve the frame a slight bit. I know people say not to cut at all, but if you look where the shock rides on the top it will contact the frame unless you grind a heck of alot of shock away.

This way if you go to sell the shocks later they arent ruined and its alot easier to cut the part out than grind the shock (took me a total of 10 mins on 2 quads I did).

They rub very little but do rub.. Everyone says they dont, but they do rub slightly on the area I circled.

I had to grind that little bent part (what you have circled) off and a little off the top of the shocks but thats all.

Exactly.

The shock rubs on the frame behind the mount (as circled) and it also rubs on the head of the coach bolt.

I'm never worried about re-selling. If I do sell these shocks I will explain why they have a very small part filed down. More likely I will sell the bike with these shocks on it. If anyone wanted to quable about such a small thing when buying a modified 2002 quad then they can kiss my a**
