could also be the valve seals.

easy way to know (even thought i am sure it is the rings) is to just pull the spark plug and see if it is black and wet that means oil is deff leaking past rings or valves

i have the motor apart now how do you tell if the valves are bad? they have a good bit of carbon on them

if you have it apart, have the heads cleaned, valve job, guides checked, and new seals put in.

id replace the rings now cause you already have the motor torn down, they are only like $20 or so

Just use a wire brush or wheel on them (you can do this to the top of the piston also) make sure you lap the valves back into the seats and if you are sure the cylinder is still in spec hone it out real good or the new rings will never seal properly. Another thing to think about is most rings dont come with the proper end gap and need to be file fit.
