Just installed a Magnum/Namura 89mm 440 big bore kit on my 01 400ex.

Going to rejet it and also put a different exhaust on it for the time being (until the guy pays for this one).

Anything I need to know about it? Going to let it idle through a tank then do another tank of no more than 1/2 throttle.

K&N air filter also installed.

Thinking of grabbing some air scoops also to help cool it a bit better.

Thanks!

Idle through a tank? You do realize these are air cooled machines, right?

Give it a couple heat cycles, letting it cool down in between each one. Then go ahead and run a tank through it alternating between 1/4 and 3/4 throttle.

agreed with B. do some cycles on it and it will be fine. steve

lol I guess I should have been more precise with how I worded that. I meant let it idle through a tank but letting it warm up then cut off and let it cool down fully then repeat for a full tank....

I put a 440 kit in my 08, and my suggestion wuld be to put a bigger front sprocket! The 440 adds way more to low end but it levels out to soon on top end, well around 3rd, 4th gear.

The track that I race at right now I am never going down into first....everything is 2nd gear. No lie I can ride it ALL in 2nd. Although I would like more bottom end in 2nd I still stay in 2nd to keep from messing the 1st gear up and 1 less shift to worry about. With the 440 I hope to be able to have more low end that I am looking for while still being able to stay in 2nd or 3rd throughout the whole track.

I would suggest a stage 1 hotcam for some more low end torque or at least a lower end exhaust like a t-4 or something with bigger numbers at 300-5000 rpns. steve

I'll have to find out what exhaust the guy put on it. The shop had an exhaust from another 400ex and he said what it was but I forgot but he said it will work for now and be better than stock.

You're not lying on the overweight part! OMG I picked it up when I took it off and was shocked how much that thing weighed....I think they made it out of pure lead! LOL

Picked up the quad today and then headed to the track, worked for a few hours then rode a good bit. Needless to say, the power increase is NICE. Love the new setup.....much easier to ride on the track. I did notice it runs hotter than before though, which I expected it to. Going to grab some air scoops for it soon.

This is the exhaust that is on it...

Love it, but will probably be having to actually buy one pretty soon.

Nice job HPI. i have a 440 kit on mine also and it's crazy. pretty sure i have the stock cam in, i bought it the way it is now. so i dont know too much about internal parts, all i know about it, is its a 440 sleeve kit with Wiseco piston. Is there a way to tell if it has a hot cam without tearing it apart? should it say on the end of the cam?
and YES it get extremely hot riding in sub-zero temperatures, i can feel the heat of the engine through my boot and gear. PLUS i am running Lucas Oil synthetic in it too.
