Works parts tend to be used by factory riders, and they are special versions of the civilian parts that are better, but are not available to the public

Many, many years ago, probably before you were even born, there was something called the "works bike". Sometimes it would look close to a production, showroom, available to the public, motocross bike, but in most cases, they looked VERY different. In many cases, they were like works of art. These bikes had the best innovations the company engineers could think up, and many times these ideas would make it to the bike you could buy at your local dealer. The works bikes were very expensive. Rumor has it the last few years Honda had works bikes, their cost was at least $100,000 to produce. Only the fastest guys in the world got to ride these bikes, and this created a huge conflict. How could the privateer (amateur rider) compete against these bikes? In '83 or '84 (I'll have to look this up to get the correct year), Yamaha took a chance and sent it's pro riders out on production based bikes, and against all odds, Ricky Johnson delivered a championship going head to head with the best hand-made machinery the other companies had to offer. In 1985, in an effort to make racing more affordable and competitive for the average racer, the AMA passed the production rule. Starting in 1986, every rider, pros included, would be on prodution based bikes. And that is your motocross history lesson for today.

Similar to how the trx 250r was pushed aside for the new production quad's.

I dont know when it comes to quads but in the automotive world Factory R Code cars and parts are usually detroyed when retired. Its a way the mfgs hide the secrets they have come up with.
