View Full Version : My new ramp

Built it, and now starts the slow process of getting enough woodchips for the landing. I made it with a removable axle so it can be moved easily. 6ft tall 12ft long 6ft wide, thinking i should get some good air time, esp when i start moving it back. What you guys think?

Ramp looks good!! But wood chips for the landing? Why?

Only way i could get the old man's go ahead, he didnt want a huge pile of dirt, i figure it will pack down pretty quick, or just throw some ply down if the woodchips turn out to be a problem

looks good, but i think the chips will end up being a problem. seems like it would be too soft a landing. and wood gets kinda springy... not even like sand.

agreed on the chips. I feel that it would spring you up again after you sink way down into it. It could present a problem with landing hard and coming to a stop if you get stuck in it. it would probably be ok with some water in it to pack it down but it would still be too soft for me to want to hit lol. Ramp looks great though! steve

wood chipps = bad idea. you'll sink and it will sent you flying. wood chipps down really pack

Wood chips are a real bad idea. Tried it once to ride a sled show = crash. Would not recomend it. But then again what would I know. :P

is that ramp made of wood? i kinda feel it lacks some triangles...but im not a ramp builder or engineer, otherwise looks good

The ramp looks good but it also looks like it could be slick especially if it gets wet.
Try mixing some sand in some old paint and give it a good coat, so you get some grip on the ramp.

As for the wood chips it would not be good, they will constantly change every jump and you most likely, spring up to much or it will slow you down to much on impact and tend to throw you over the bars.

We used wood chips back 20 years ago for ramps but not for landing, for the reasons I stated above. As you can see in the pic that the jumps are small because a big pile of chips was not very good.
You might be able to adapt to it but it’s going to be deferent then your use to.

idk bout a chip landing for quads but sleds use em all the time ive seen entire sno-x tracks built outta chips and there a sled freestyle ramp not far from me tha has a chip landing thats about 40ft tall but then again sleds and quads are 2 different things

Idk the whole thing seems sketchy.. Wood ramp with woodchip landing.

There is no way in hell i would hit that with a quad. i thought at first it was made out of steal with a sheet of wood as the ramp itself. no no no, those are 2x4's. now this is just my personal opinion. and i think the only way to get away with using that as a landing is throw a lot of fine sand on top and pack it. the fine sand will settle in good.

Yeah that was the first quad I ever bought, I think it was the second year after they first came out with them. That pic was taken in 85 or 86, it’s hard to remember back that far. lol
I had a twist throttle on that one and loved it.

It’s been a long time since I’ve used chips for jumps or landings but it wasn’t something you could not compensate for once you get used to it.
But then again I wasn’t jumping as high as that ramp would through you. I defiantly would work my way up to it and start small.

sand ontop is a good idea, might work well, and this is my third wood ramp and never had a problem, and they are 4x4s not 2xs. Also going to put shingles ontop still for grip and weathering

If I remember right the chips will decay over time and pack down and it should get better over time. When the chips were new and not packed down it was like landing in deep dry sand, and it would scrub off all your forward momentum.
The shingles sound good for the ramp I am sure you’ll get great traction with that.
Check the pile real good and make sure there are no big chunks of wood hiding in there some where. You don’t want to land on a big stump berried in the chips.
Can’t wait to see the vid.

I would die if I jumped a ramp like that. I barley have the nerve to jump a little tru a ditch. Plus I just got my first quad at the age of 30. Hopefully there is some type of racing that does not involve much jumping.

Maybe somesort of trail racing. That would be fun.

Great job on the ramp - it looks killer. Not real sure about the wood structure? Quads weigh 400 pounds moving at 30 mph - thats alot of impact on wood and screws!! I've gotta ask, why is this your third ramp out of wood??? What happened to the others???

The wood chip landing? Your dad don't mind looking at a pile of old decaying wood chips, but don't want a pile of dirt?? The dirt could easily be grass seeded all the way around to blend in with the yard!

I don't think I would be the first one off that ramp into a pile of wood chips on a quad. Maybe on a bicycle - into a pond. lol

At least there's an arrow to tell you which way to hit the ramp. I'd hate to attempt it going the other way.

AGREED - the arrow is very important!! not sure what the other thing on there is?????

To remind him of tetris on take-off. He needs to look for the best possible fit on the landing ramp. :p

Ha so after all this ripping on woodchips i decided im going to just plywood over the landing so i dont sink in and get tossed, reason for it being my third jump is because the other ones were not big enough, but they all lasted and i never had a problem with any of them

slightlybent47

I’m not saying that the chips won’t work. But it will be deferent than dirt.
The ply wood would work and that would help keep the landing consistent every time and you won’t have to groom the landing after a few jumps. Just make sure you put something down on the wood to get traction on when you land. My only other fear with just chips is that you may end up with a flat when landing on those sharp chips with so much force. Ride over the chip pile and see what it dose, you never know you might like it like that. If you do put ply wood down I’d go with some ¾ cdx and use some 2x4 under the bottom and nail it together so it don’t shift or walk around on you.

Good luck!!

why not do a mix of dirt/woodchips

motofreak2772

Build a wood landing.. You could have your own freestyle shows lol.

Hancock_214
04-27-2010, 06:40 PM
Yeah why can't you just use the woodchips as a filler then put a 2 or 3 foot coat of dirt over it???

quader400

finally hit it, works great. wound up putting carpet down ontop. Now i just need more wood chips to get the landing bigger so i can keep making the gap bigger
