Well i just bought a used 2001 400ex about a month ago. It has a lot done to it and it runs awesome. There is a lite ticking kinda sound by the motor. I was wondering if its the oil going into the motor i have an oil thing up front. What do you guys think?

It probably just your valves they just need tightened

all 400's will tick a little bit on the top end...its just the nature of the beast.

I also agree on valves but was wondering something else since we are on the engine noise topic. Occasionally I hear a louder tick every once in a while when I hammer the throttle and then let off. Its more of a deep pitch tick and only happens every once in a while. Anyone know what I am talking about? Sorry my intentions were not to pirate the thread, I was just wondering.

This is my first 400ex so wasn't sure if it was normal or not. Ill get the valves adjusted and tighten. np man. Site is to ask questions.

keep in mind you have a hotcam. They are nortorious for being a little louder than stock. Also valve clearances are .001 greater than stock. a noisy valve is a happy valve.

Mako19..does this happen in every gear? after you let off or under acceleration

Okay good. The guy kept really good care of it and tighten every thing and lubed every thing up before i bought it so if its supposed to be like that im happy.

i would still check them for piece of mind. When you know they are set right and you hear it run...you will remember this as your "normal" sound in your bike. Easier to notice changes then.

It will happen usually in the lower gears maybe 1st and second and always after I let off the gas. Sometimes it doesn't happen for a while and then some days I hear it a few times. I wish I could describe it a little better. The quad runs great and make awesome power. Oil is clean as can be. I'm thinking a vibration caused by blipping the throttle like that in the lower gears is what is making that happen. I dunno. I know these bike are noisy though.

id check the valve clearance and for timing chain slop just for peace of mind
