I currently have a inspiron 1521 running vista 32 bit. I got ahold of a Vista 64 bit disc. It says my computer is capable of 64 but my question is about drivers. There is only drivers listed on dell's website for 32 bit. Is it possible to find drivers that work on this model with that version of Vista?

any reason that you want to change? it really has no plus sides other than more memory support and i would just get windows 7 if you have the money it is worth it

now as for getting drivers if they are not listed then you must find them per device. so you would need to know what your hardware is like what type of soundcard you have them look for the driver on that companies website if they have it

any questions you can email me at ellingsoc26@gmail.com

The reason I'm not upgrading to 7 is I'm borrowing this disc for free and I don't really want to shell the money out on a two year old laptop. I just bought some ram the other day so I figure upgrading to 64 will make better use of it. I know the sound and wireless drivers on dells site are 64 compatible but the video is the problem. My video card is a ATI Radeon X1270 and I can't find a 64 bit driver for it.

one of the bad thing about Vista 64 was the lack of drivers you may be better off staying with the 32 bit version

I read on another sight that the dell Latitude D531 has the same audio and video cards as my computer and has drivers for Vista 64. Would this solve my problem?

Personally speaking I have never found the need for over a gig or two of ram. My laptop has 512 and XP and its so so, my desktop has xp and 1gb and never any issues.

Ram over 1-2gb is only needed if you do major work like photoediting or play insane games with everything maxed out 24/7 imho.

True but Vista uses more resourses. Trust me if I could get ahold if a xp pro disc I would much rather use it.

My sister has an iBook and I'm pretty sure she paid like 2k for it...a little overprice in my opinion. Plus I like the feel of Windows better.

Find xp on the net, it and a key are always somewhere since it vista and 7 came out. May or may not have issues running on your laptop tho.

Oh and as for macs, no thanks if I wanted to pay out the arse for a system that just has a nice GUI then wtf is the point of them?

There are drivers on dells site for xp homeonly I think so I'd basically be in the same boat. Might as well give it a try I mean this isn't my only computer and I can always go back to 32 bit.

Well I installed it and it works! The video and audio drivers worked and so did the wifi. My only worry is if the chipset will run 4gb. Its a Ati Radeon X1270. It shows the Latitude D531 can run 8gb with Vista 64 installed so I imagine it will work right?
