View Full Version : Having Trouble Selling 400ex

I'm trying to sell my 400ex, and I am having a lot of trouble generating any interest in it. I contribute this to the fact that it is hard to come up with a good value for the quad. I have a lot into it and the thing basically looks brand new. See pics. My question to everyone is; What can I sell this thing for? It needs to go but I don't want to get ripped off at the same time.

What do you have it listed for right now? I'd say put it up for $3000 O.B.O. and see if you get any serious offers. Just for some perspective, my friend just bought a 2001 for $2000. The owner said it only had 20 hours on it and it had been sitting in the garage for years untouched. It looked the case, too. Like it came out of a time capsule.

I have it up for $4000 right now. The Houser A Arms and Elka suspension are brand new along with a G Force Axle. I'm thinking about dropping it down to 3800 to see if anyone bites. I know its not a big drop but it looks better on the eyes. I put way to much into this thing.

2-3 years ago I paid 1600 for mine, it had cut front fenders, some $$$ beadlocked douglass 8" wheels and brand new turf tamers and was fairly clean. Had been wrecked once and found out it needed a steering stem.

I been seeing them go for 1000-3k depending on year and what ya got. Dont expect to get what you got into it cause they are so plentiful.

Yeah, it's tough trying to sell a 400EX these days. Especially one that you've spent time and money on. 450s go for under $4000. New ones can be had for around $4500 OTD.

I would part out the suspension components and sell it stock. You will get more money that way.

I'm moving on to the two wheeled world, and I am looking at a 2009 CRF450R. My wife says this has to go first. It is tough trying to get decent money for 400's. I had one guy email me just to say that it is a 400ex, nothing special, and that he could buy a 450 for the price. Not to mention all of the scammers on craigslist. Thank you for the comments though.

I also seen this on CL and thought to myself "good luck" dont get me wrong its nice but not when theres 50 others in the area for half the price, like stated before you should part out the aftermarket and put the stock back on, then maybe get 2500 for it in stock form and maybe 3000 how it sits...also to bad you cut the fenders, good luck with your sale

I wish I still had the stock components now to sell it that way. I sold most of them to help pay for the mods that I did.

I picked up a mint `05 last weekend for $2300 its still got the tits on the tires and the exhaust hasnt got a spec of rust . 400ex's are everywhere for cheap right now. i would try parting it out man. or else take a loss.

Sell arms axel shocks revbox for around 1k.

Sell the quad for 2500$.

Bam 3500$ or so.

As the 450's drop in price the 400ex's drop as well.

Around here they sell for 2500 or light moded.

450r's are 3k-3.5k

Full modifed 450's 4k-5k.

You can buy a brand new 2010 ds450 for 4500 at our local dealership quad prices are diffrent then what they were 2 years ago or so.

Yeah prices are dropping. It wasn't that long ago that I sold my modified Blaster for $3000. I especially can't believe what you can get in the dirt bike market for the money.

Economy tanked pretty good, people dont have enough cash anymore and prices of everything just dropped like a stone.

Its picking back up but you wont see stuff for sale for what it was for a long time.

Unfortunately when you get into modding or customization on a vehicle of any kind, you won't get what you put into it back out of it.
Also a huge part of what it's worth depends on your local market. Do lots of people offroad nearby, is there an overload of similar quads for sale etc.

It's too bad the stock components are gone now because I'll agree that parting it out and selling it like stock is best way to get your money back, but in this case you may just have to bite the bullet.

the problem with putting money into quads (especially the 400s) is that you wont see a return. i'd never invest alot of money into a machine unless you didnt plan on selling it for that reason. 4k is too steep. list it at 3200 and see what happens. the other thing is to put it back to stock and sell the a arms and shocks seperately and see how you make out that way. unfortuantely you just wont get your money back

I bought a new left over 07 last year put about 3500. in extras on it , picked up a 450r and decided to sell the 400 it had maybe 3 hours on it and could not sell it with all the extras for what i gave for just the quad, luckily i kept all stock parts, returned it to stock and sold it for 1600.00 less than what i paid for it new. luckily i got enough out of it to cover the cost of the 450 and am still trying to sell some of the parts to make some money back. tough selling new parts for less than half price, especially when some of the parts were never run only bolted on.

Good Luck!!!!

id drop it down to 3500 OBO and see what happens. around where i live i paid 2500 or so for my 05 last year, wasnt even broken in on the stock parts.

Part out as much as you can until its as close to stock at possible then sell it you will get the biggest return that way and if you want to sell that front end let me know. you wont get much more then what a stock 400ex is worth of that year IMO especially in Michigan i think you would be lucky to sell it for 3000 most people detour from built quads because they think they were raced/beat.

Simply put your getting no interest because your price is ridiculous.

Before anyone buys or sells anything, knowing the market is 3/4 of the battle.

$4,000 is nuts

There is a guy selling a truly mint EX on CL by me with all kinds of nice polished stuff like nerfs and such. He started at like 6k and is down to 3500 and no takes for at least a year!

Your not selling a mint ss yenko 1969 camaro w/a 427 big block, its just a 400ex... which isnt ultra rare like that camaro which would sell for 100k easy even in good shape.

Fact of the matter is modified things dont bring the kinda cash you hope for. Stock stuff sells for decent prices usually unless the markets flooded-which it is in this case.

Exactly, and you have to remember, the 400ex in its hay-day was THE sport quad on the market, now all of those buyers from '99-'04 are trading up or out (do to the economy) since now there are a ton of options in the market, which floods the market

^ Pretty much so.

Friend of mine bought a relatively nice shape 05 for 2500. Im sure if he held out he coulda got a better deal but it is what it is. Thats only 5 years old, now imagine the fact his sister and her BF bought either 07 or 08 leftovers from a dealer for like 3500 each less than 6 months back.

I bought my 00 for 1500 back in 07 and it had a fat handlebar, and $$$ beadlocked wheels with brand new tires on the rear. The kid had tried to sell it on craigslist for at least a month and went from 2800 down to 1500 when I called. It did need some work and I didnt realize it at the time, but 1500 out the door wasnt bad at all.

alot of people would prefer to buy a stock bike over a modded one anyway because most people like to modify it to their tastes.

I just bought an 07, completely stock and to look at it I don't think the guy rode it very much, I paid $2500, I actually thought it might be a tad high but it was in too good of shape to pass up. The only other one that was close was an 05 with "everything completely rebuilt" and if you ask me on an 05 nothing should have been rebuilt yet so I wasn't gonna touch that with a 10ft pole.

Well the quad finally sold for $3200. Not exactly what I hoped for out of it, but it went to a nice guy lookig for a really nice birthday present for his son. I pick up the brand new 2009 YZ250F tomorrow. As excited as I am for the new bike; I can't help but feel really sad that the quad is gone now. I spent a lot of time with that thing (my wife would say more time with it then her).

Thats really cool that u sold it even if its not exactly what u wanted to get
Ya know its sad how much the price of 400s have gone down recently with all the new 450s and what not coming into the game
You can pick up a good condition 00-03 400 for probly around 1500 that doesnt have a ton of mods

You had a REALLY nice 400 there but when its time for something different its just time to change up a little

Personally think i will try and keep a 400 for as long as i can cause they never gave me any problems and ill run mine into the ground before i sell it because around me theres not much of a chance of me gettin out of it what i would want or even close to what i would have in it

that depends how much you ride the machine. if you put alot of hrs on it, then its possible to do lots of top ends. on a 5 yr old bike, the top end should have been done at least twice by now. but again, thats dependant on how much you ride it. you should do a top en every 100 hrs or so on those machines

i bought a really clean slightly modded 05 for $2000 last spring. and the 05's and up are usually a little more expensive but with the mods you have on there and how clean it looks id say 3000

another thing though is that i had over 400 hrs on my top end when i let my '05 go lol. and she still ran strong
