I will have first hand exp here soon against a piped, jetted 07 450r, also a 04 yzf450r with mods.. I think that a well matched 440 should be able to stay with a 450, esp in the woods..

as long as theres not field areas and stuff for a 450 to pass, your ex will out handle a 450r in the woods with decent shocks. you would be on the clutch alot in real tight gncc stuff for a 450, thats why alot of the riders use 400ex or z400 with 440 and 460 kits to race. they are just as powerful, but with better control. with my built 426 motor i can walk all over 450s in the woods. but its 90% rider 10% bike.

my first real race with my 400 will be at the lorretta lynn's gncc this weekend, I have a mostly stock motor so I should find out how it does compared to the 450s in the field sections. last year I raced a 250r there (track and weather was PERFECT :) ) I didnt do too bad but still got passed by 450s in the fast sectons. last year there was only like one or two small field sections, and not any real fast WOT stretches, but the trails were FAST with some good jumps built into them, but not too many tight, technical sections.

this year its either gonna be really dusty, or slightly muddy/slick cause its been dry down there awhile, but they are callin for rain this weekend. I think I should hang with the 450s in the woods and hills no problem, but like somebody already said, its 90% rider and 10% bike. I consider myself a little better then average rider, but I usually dont have the stamina to ride at a aggressive pace for 2 hours, but we will see. Im probably gonna race in the C class

400man, You might want to try the Sport class, as it's usually smaller than the C classes and won't be as crazy in the early going.

Here's my 416EX, fortunately it is much more capable than I am! :-)

is there an age limit or anything? im 23, and my brother who is racing a banshee, is 21. i'd really like to race in the same class as him so we can rag on each other on who does better lol

at the ironman gncc last year, we raced in the 1st year racer class, and he placed 2nd, and like 170th someing in the overall morning race.

The Sport class is 15+, so you're both fine on age. There is some debate as to whether a Banshee would be eligible for Sport. By the rules posted on GNCCracing.com :

Some people argue that "production" means the model must still be in production, but the rule does not state this. RP posted this rule a couple of years ago, but rescinded it shortly thereafter.

Whatever class you run, Good luck! We missed the Ironman last year, but plan to hit it this year. Maybe we'll see you on the line?!

a. Production Rule: OEM motor and matching frame combination model required. Frame geometry must remain as designed by the OEM, including all suspension pivot points. Engine modifications, frame reinforcements, and aftermarket A-arms, caster brackets, swing-arms and suspension are permitted. AMA homologation required, i.e., 100 identical machines available. See the 2010 Class Chart for production class designation.

b. Sport (15+): (201-400cc) 2-wheel drive production models. Modifications are permitted. No engine displacement reduction permitted. (that is, de-stroking a 450R to 400cc - mfr440)

well I got on the gncc site and it says theres a sportsman A/B class thats a non-points paying class. I guess its sorta like the 1st year racer class, doesnt saying anything about production models or requirements. and i guess that class will be the last one to start since its at the bottom of the list. i'd have no problem trying that class, cause if its just gonna be a bunch of slow guys then I will be out front pretty fast and just concentrate on keeping a fast pace for the whole race. what really pisses me off when I tryed the C class one time was these "fast" guys on their built 450s that get on my but and start hollaring and hooting for me to move over, and if I do get over, I end up passing em like 5 or 10 mins later when they get stuck or pull over cause they are tired lol. last year at lorretta's, I seen no telling how many guys on badass bikes just pulled over on the last lap looking tired like they had the crap beat out of em, and there I went on my old 250r buzzing by em lol
